Add page breaks & move margins

You can add breaks or adjust the margins of your document. The 3 types of breaks you can add are:

  • Page break
  • Section break within a page
  • Page break before a selected paragraph
Important: These features aren't available in documents that are in pageless format. To use these features, make sure your document is in pages format.

Add section and page breaks

  1. Open a  Google Doc.
  2. Select a section of your content.
  3. At the top, click Insert and then Break.
  4. Choose a break type.
    • ​To start on a new page, click Page break.
    • To start a new section on the same page, click Section break (continuous).

Add a page break before a paragraph

To insert a page break before a paragraph:

  1. Select the entire paragraph or click anywhere into the paragraph.
  2. Select an option:
      • In the toolbar,  go to Line & paragraph spacing  and then Add page break before.
      • At the top, go to Format and then Line & paragraph spacing  and then Add page break before.

Tip: To get a heading to stay at the top of a new page, you can select it and use Add page break before.

Show or hide section breaks

Section breaks are automatically hidden when you open a document. To show lines where you’ve inserted section breaks:

  1. At the top, click View.
  2. Click Show section breaks.

Notes:

  • To hide the section break again, click Show section breaks.
  • When you set section break lines to be visible or hidden, that setting will be the same for all documents that you open until you change it.
Delete a page break 
  1. Open a document in Google Docs.
  2. Click underneath the page break.
  3. On your keyboard, press Backspace or Delete until the page break is removed.

Move margins

  1. Open a document in Google Docs.
  2. Select a section of your text, graphics or images.
  3. At the top, drag the triangle to where you want the margin to be.

Tip: If you have multiple sections, click Fileand thenPage setup. At the top, choose which sections to change. Set your margins, and click OK.
