Introduction to Gmail ads

Gmail native ads help you connect with potential customers by showing them ads at the top of their inbox tabs.  The ads can appear in either web or app environments on mobile and desktop devices. See previewing Gmail native ads for examples of how your ad will appear.

How does it work?

  • A Gmail ad initially appears in its collapsed form at the top of the Social or Promotion inbox tabs. An impression is counted each time the ad appears.
  • When a user clicks or taps on the ad, it expands to the size of an email that can be used to meet a variety of advertising goals. An engagement is counted when an ad is expanded.
  • If the user clicks on the content within the expanded ad, a click is counted.

In Display & Video 360, you can use Gmail line items and the native creative workflow to purchase ads on Gmail inventory.

How will I be charged?

You will only be charged for engagements (when users click or tap your ad to open the expanded view). You will not be charged for impressions (when users see the collapsed ad).
