Third-party tags

Display & Video 360 supports tags from most most major ad servers. When you add a third-party ad tag, Display & Video 360 automatically wraps tags from supported ad servers with an impression tracking macro and a click tracking macro. By adding these macros, you'll be able to view the number of impressions, click, and conversions associated with the creative in Display & Video 360.

Add a third-party tag

  1. Open an advertiser, then click Creatives in the left menu.

  2. Click New and then Third-party and then Third-party tag.

  3. Enter a name for the creative in Display & Video 360 then select the correct dimensions for the new creative.

  4. Enter a Landing Page URL for the creative. All third-party hosted creatives must have a landing page URL.

  5. (Expandable creatives only) In order to match your expandable creative with the correct inventory, select the correct Expanding direction. If the creative expands on mouseover instead of click, check the Expands on hover checkbox that appears after you select a direction.

If your creative doesn't expand, set the Expanding direction to None.

  6. Paste your creative's third-party ad tag into Third-party tag text field. Tags are limited to 8192 characters and 32 KB or less. To shorten third-party tags, remove extra spaces and unnecessary code. If necessary, compress JavaScript code.

  7. After you click outside the field, Display & Video 360 will validate the ad tag. If the tag type is recognized, macros will be automatically inserted into the tag. If there are problems with validation, a warning is shown beneath the field.

Display & Video 360 can add macros automatically to tags from most major ad servers. If your tag isn't recognized, check the tag and try again. If there's a problem, you can add macros manually, then click Skip click tracking verification. The most important macros are those used for tracking clicks and for cache-busting. Learn more about macros.
  8. Click Test tag, and then click your creative to ensure that the click goes through and the click-tracking macros work correctly.

    1. (Expandable creatives only) Expand the creative and make sure it expands in the direction or directions you set in Step 5 above.

  9. Once you've clicked, return to Display & Video 360. If click tracking was successful, you'll see a checkmark and the message "Click tracking received". If click tracking isn't working, check your tag, macros, and creative for potential problems.

  10. Click Done.

Once a creative has been added to Display & Video 360, the creative will be manually and automatically reviewed to ensure the creative functions correctly and is compliant with the creative policies of both Display & Video 360 and any inventory sources that have explicit creative requirements. You’ll see information about the creative’s review status in the Audit status section of the creative. Learn more about the creative review process.

(Optional) Add a Campaign Manager tracking ad

If you upload a wrapped third-party ad tag, but also want to measure it in Campaign Manager, you can add a Campaign Manager tracking ad.

To avoid reporting discrepancies and issues with conversion tracking, carefully follow the steps below.
  1. First, make sure the CM tracking ad you're using includes the parameter dc_dbm_token with the macro ${DC_DBM_TOKEN}.
  2. Expand the Serving properties section of the creative.
  3. Select a tracking ad from Campaign Manager.
  4. Expand the Additional details section of the creative.
  5. Select Requires ping for attribution.
