Stop what you are doing and get those files backed up to Drive or external media. Now!
You should never store anything important on a Chromebook unless you also have a cop somewhere else. ChromeOS will force a Powerwash if it detects a problem, and will also delete files if you get low on space. We warn about this constantly. Search through this forum and you will find many sad stories from users who have lost many important files.
A Hardware reset should not delete files if you do it properly - that means starting with a completely powered down Chromebook.
