Automatic Updates and Security Checks Will Stop

I'm wondering if there is anything I can or should do when I receive the Final Notification that Automatic Updates and Security Checks, etc., will end?  I don't know all that much about this stuff, I usually just use the recommended settings.  If anyone knows something I should do, please reply.

When your Chromebook has reached its Automatic Update Expiry date your Chromebook will no longer be receiving updates. This does not mean the end of the usefulness of your Chromebook. It will probably work just fine for another 2 years or so after the AUE is reached. Then certain websites (especially those you must log into) may start rejecting the Chrome browser as being too out-of-date and thus possibly insecure. If you must have access to those specific websites then your options are:

  1. Update your Chromebook to a newer model
  2. Remove ChromeOS and install a lightweight Linux distro
  3. Check if you can install the LaCrOS browser and if it will update.

Option 2 above is beyond the scope of this forum, but check out the Mr. Chromebox website and others for assistance. Option 3 is explained here:

Which Chromebook model do you have?  If it's still <10 years old, you might get the option to opt into an extension for updates starting in 2024:  https://blog.google/outreach-initiatives/education/automatic-update-extension-chromebook

The numbers are slightly worn but it looks like Model # T-v010wm.  I’m not sure about the T but all others are correct.

It's probably this HP:  https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05518095

The official Chromebook AUE site still shows that Chromebook as ending updates in June 2022:  https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/6220366?hl=en#zippy=%2Chp.  It was released in 2017, so there's still a possibility it might get the 10 year extension.  However, it's not asterisked in that site, so I'm not sure if that means it definitely won't get the extension, or if Google is still working on it.

This is exactly why I will not buy another Chromebook.  Mine is in perfect condition and it's a waste to toss it and have to spend hundreds on a new one.  They are environmentally and fiscally not sound.  Poor job Google.

How will this address my concern regarding safety updates?  I make many purchases and do banking from my laptop, and the safety updates are necessary.

It doesn't address your concerns about older Chromebooks that have reached the end of life -- that's why I said you made a good point.  My point was that newer Chromebooks come with 10 years of security update support, so buying a current Chromebook becomes less of an environmental and fiscal burden.  And from a safety standpoint, there are still some security advantages of Chromebooks, since they are much less vulnerable to malware than Windows machines.

I have an ASUS Flip model number C101P  / C101 C101PA - DB02 with a 10.1 display with a led backlight Touchscreen, with ARM MaliT860MP4 graphics processor with Camera&Stereo Speakers & Microphone"CPU is a Rockchip RK3399 it has 6 core processor, 4 GB of RAM LPDDR3 SDRAM ,16 GB of eMMC main storage-has B luetooth and micro SD  and headphone/microphone combo jack: USB 2.0 + 2 x USB 3.1-C 3.1 Gen 1 interfaces .Chrome OS Convertable -Silver Chromebook battery is 2-cell Lithium ion with 38 Wh capacity. this Chromebook was manufactured in September of 2017 and i didn't purchase it until right before Covid - 19 pandemic started with one of those checks from the federal reserve called a stimulus check by most people but that was Late 2019 to early 2020, and i'm getting this message like this Chromebook is obsolete already even though it hasn't even been close to 10 years, this is the BS that these device manufactures like laptops and cell phone users are suing over... i'm working on the beginning of 4th year of rarely using this device for it to look like it came out of the box, and to get notifications about a final update for security and all, makes me wonder who is giving it to me without the lube and without a reach around or anything, for a well overpriced laptop that the OS development team wants to stop with updates , because they don't care about us Americans, probably , more of those liberal democrat, Ruin America and its citizens while taking advantage with little to no over site or accountability, maybe a call to the consumer complaints department in the DOJ will make something happen to help people like myself.

even windows gave operating software upgrades free before they stopped with updates for instance windows 10 was given to legacy windows users like 7 & 8.1 , and again when windows 10 can upgrade to windows 11 free, but Chrome OS its no free anything and out of the blue notifications about this crap, and to sell newer Chromebooks , but forget the people that recently purchased within the last 3.11115 years instead of the 10 years mentioned. Chrome developers if your not sending anymore security or framework updates, then whoever is behind these actions need to send me a new Chromebook OS , or Chromebook because of this unethical and unfair trade practices 10 years is the stated date from release date of the platform  in the Automatic Updates Policy so did this Chromebook have a very old operating system factory installed when chrome had newer operating systems available and 3.115 years after purchase this laptop is going to end up just another multi-hundred dollar paper weight, and i was taken advantage of believing that  a new laptop and alleged new operating system would last at least 8 to 10 years but i was wrong, because I in good faith purchased this item and it was scheduled for Planned Obsolescence as well as built-in Obsolescence and premature obsolescence that expired way prematurely than the Automatic Updates policy stated. and that is what chrome calls good faith business practices??? Well its not from my end of this deal...
