Sign in to websites with PIN or fingerprint

For quicker access to supported websites and apps in Chrome, you can sign in with your Chromebook PIN or fingerprint.

You can sign in with a PIN or fingerprint if:

  • The website supports WebAuthn, a secure web authentication protocol. The website prompts you to turn on WebAuthn for future sign-ins while you use your Chromebook.
  • You already set up your Chromebook for PIN or fingerprint unlock

Because the credentials are device-specific, you must agree to use WebAuthn on each new device.

Use WebAuthn with your PIN

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. Go to the website you want to sign in to.
  3. Go to the website’s sign in page.
  4. Enter your username.
  5. Select Continue.
  6. On the number pad that appears, enter your Chromebook PIN.

Common questions

Do the websites store my PIN or fingerprint?
Even when you use your Chromebook PIN or saved fingerprints to sign in to a website, the site never gets your PIN or fingerprint data.
How do I know if the Chromebook PIN or Fingerprint prompts are trustworthy?
When your Chromebook prompts you to enter your PIN or touch the fingerprint sensor as part of WebAuthn, the dialog stays on top of your Chrome browser. Notice that the top of the dialog is higher than the address bar of the browser. Your Chromebook avatar also shows above the “Verify your identity” phrase. These precautions make the dialog difficult to replicate for malicious websites that attempt to mimic your Chromebook.
Why do I get a failure message after I enter my PIN or scan my fingerprint?
If you get the dialog box but after you scan your fingerprint or enter your PIN you get a failure message in Chrome:
  1. Sign out of your Chromebook.
  2. Sign in again.
