Manage passwords in Chrome

You can have Chrome save your passwords for different sites.

The way Chrome saves your passwords depends on whether you want to store and use them across devices. When you're signed in to Chrome, you can save your passwords to your Google Account. You can use passwords in Chrome across your devices and in some apps on your devices.

Otherwise, you can store passwords locally on your computer only.

You can manage passwords saved to your Google Account at passwords.google.com.

Manage new passwords

If you enter a new password on a site, Chrome will ask to save it. To accept, tap Save.

Add a new password

1. On your Android device, open Chrome .
2. At the top right, tap More .
3. Tap Settings Google Password Manager.
4. Below the search bar, tap Add password .
5. Enter the website, username, and password.
6. At the top right, tap Save.

Start or stop saving passwords

By default, Chrome offers to save your password. You can turn this option off or on at any time.

1. On your Android device, open Chrome .
2. At the top right, tap More .
3. Tap Settings Google Password Manager.
4. At the bottom right, tap Settings .
5. Turn Offer to save passwords on or off.

Manage saved passwords

Sign in with a saved password

If you saved your password on a previous visit to a website, Chrome can help you sign in. 

1. On your Android device, open Chrome .
2. Go to a site you've visited before.
3. Go to the site’s sign-in form.
4. To choose the sign-in info that you want to use, select the username field.
5. To sign in with your username and password on your device, you may need to use your fingerprint or passcode.

If Chrome doesn't offer your saved password: To get possible passwords, tap Password .

Add notes to your saved password

You can add notes to a saved password to help you remember information about an account or to save details required at sign in. Once you add a note, it has the same security protection as a password.

1. On your Android device, open Chrome .
2. At the top right, tap More .
3. Tap Settings Google Password Manager.
4. Under “Search passwords,” select a password.
5. Tap Edit.
6. In the text box, enter your note.
7. At the top right, tap Save.

Show, edit, delete, or export passwords

1. On your Android device, open Chrome .
2. At the top right, tap More .
3. Tap Settings Google Password Manager.
4. Show, edit, delete, or export a password:
   • Show: Tap the password that you want to show Show password .
   • Edit: Tap the password that you want to change and tap Edit. Edit your password, then tap Save.
   • Delete: Tap the password that you want to remove, then tap Delete.
   • Export: Tap Settings Export passwords.

Tip: To delete your saved passwords, delete browsing data. Then select "Passwords."

Check for compromised passwords

You can check if your saved passwords were exposed in a data breach by checking all of them at once.

To check your saved passwords:

1. On your Android device, open Chrome .
2. At the top right, tap More Settings .
3. Tap Google Password Manager Checkup.

Share your password

Important:

• You can only share your password with a member of your family group. Create a family group.
• Use Google Password Manager and update Google Chrome.

To securely share a copy of your saved password with a family member:

1. On your Android device, open Chrome .
2. At the top right, tap More Settings Google Password Manager.
3. Under “Search passwords,” select a password.
4. At the bottom left, tap Share .
5. Select the family member you want to share with.
6. Tap Share Done.
   • The password is saved in the receiver's Google Account and available for autofill.

Sign in to sites & apps automatically

You can automatically sign in to any sites and apps where you've saved your info with "Sign in automatically." When you turn on "Sign in automatically," you don't need to confirm your username, password, or third-party sign-in credentials.

If you want to confirm your saved info when you sign in, you can turn off "Sign in automatically."

1. On your Android device, open Chrome .
2. At the top right, tap More .
3. Tap Settings Google Password Manager.
4. At the bottom right, tap Settings .
5. Turn Auto sign-in on or off.

Autofill passwords

If you saved your passwords on previous visits to websites, Chrome can help you autofill that information.

1. On your Android device, open Chrome .
2. Go to a site you've visited before.
3. Go to the site's sign-in form.
4. To choose the sign-in info that you want to use, select the username field.

Tip: If Chrome doesn't suggest a password, tap Passwords Select password.

Add Google Password Manager to your home screen

For easy access, you can add the Google Password Manager shortcut to your home screen.

1. On your Android device, open Chrome .
2. Tap Settings Google Password Manager.
3. At the bottom right, tap Settings .
4. Tap Add shortcut to your home screen.
5. To place the shortcut in your home screen, touch and hold the shortcut.

Manage password change alerts

You may get an alert from Chrome if you use a password and username combination that has been compromised in a data leak on a third party website or app. Compromised password and username combinations are unsafe because they’ve been published online.

We recommend that you change any compromised passwords as soon as you can. You can check your saved passwords and find sites that use the compromised password.

Chrome makes sure that your passwords and usernames are protected so they can’t be read by Google.

To change your compromised password when you get an alert:

1. Tap Password Checkup.
2. Follow the prompts to change your password on each site.

If you use Safe Browsing and select “Enhanced protection,” these checks will happen automatically. If you want to turn these checks off, you can switch to “Standard protection.” To start or stop getting these notifications:

1. On your Android device, open Chrome .
2. At the top right, tap More Settings Privacy and security.
3. Tap Safe browsing Standard protection.
4. Turn Warn you if a password was compromised in a data breach on or off.
