Fix web pages opening slowly or not loading

If a web page is opening slowly or won't open at all, try restarting Chrome.

If multiple web pages aren't loading or Chrome keeps crashing, find out how to repair Chrome if it crashes or won't open.

Web page error codes

The following error codes mean that there’s a problem opening the web page. To fix, follow the troubleshooting steps in this article.

  • ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED
  • ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED
  • ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT
  • ERR_CONNECTION_RESET
  • ERR_NEWORK_CHANGED
  • ERR_TIMED_OUT
  • ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED
  • ERR_CACHE_MISS
  • ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE
  • ERR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE

Step 1: Check your network

On your computer, check if you're still connected to the Internet. Make sure that your device has a connection to network data or Wi-Fi.

Step 2: Restart Chrome

Sometimes, Chrome might be trying to do too much, causing web pages to open slowly.

  1. Close Chrome.
    • Windows: Press Ctrl + q.
    • Mac: Press ⌘ + q.
  2. Re-open Chrome.
  3. Try opening the web page again.

Tip: You can also re-open any tabs that were open before:

  • Windows: Press Ctrl + Shift + t.
  • Mac: Press ⌘ + Shift + t.

Step 3: Troubleshoot page loading problems

If restarting Chrome didn't fix it, try the steps below to solve the problem.

1. See if the issue is with Chrome or the web page

To figure out if the problem is from the web page or with Chrome, try opening the web page in another browser. For example, try using Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari to open the web page.

If the page opens correctly in another browser

If the web page successfully opens in another browser, try the steps below to fix the issue in Chrome:

  1. Close every tab except for the one you're trying to open, then try reloading the web page.
    • Your computer might not have enough memory available to load the site. Computers use memory to run apps, extensions and programs. Low memory can cause them to run slowly or stop working.
  2. Clear your cache and cookies, then try reopening the web page.
    • Chrome might have information stored about the site or your information that's stopping the web page from loading fully.
  3. If you use Windows, use the Chrome Cleanup Tool.
    • There could be unwanted programs on your computer getting in the way of the web page opening correctly. The Chrome Cleanup Tool will help you find and remove these unwanted programs.

If the page doesn't open in another browser

If the web page doesn't open in another browser, it's possible that the problem is either the site or your computer.

Sometimes, other programs or apps get in the way of a web page loading correctly.

Turn off your computer, then turn it back on and try opening the page again.

Try another computer to see if that fixes the problem. If your problem is resolved, you can try a few things to fix the problem on your original device:

  • Check your Internet connection.
  • Check for any available software updates.
