You can:
- Sign in to Chat from a computer, then use Chat in Gmail or on the web.
- Sign in to the Chat app on your phone or tablet.
Use Chat in Gmail
You can use Chat directly in Gmail on a desktop and in the Gmail app for Android and iOS.
If you can't find Chat in Gmail, you may need to turn it on in the Gmail settings. Use Chat in Gmail.
Access Chat from the web
To message people from the web, open Chat in your browser.

Download and install the Chat app
To message people from your mobile device, download the Chat app for Android and iOS.
Sign in to Google Chat
Important: To use Chat, you need a Google Account. Learn how to create a Google Account.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chat app

Tip: Chat displays the name and profile photo from your Google Account. Learn how to change personal info in your Google Account.
Use Chat at work or school
If you have a work or school account that's part of Google Workspace, you can use Chat to communicate in large spaces, small groups or with another person.
Before you use Chat, your organisation needs to set it up. If you can't see Chat, contact your administrator. Learn how to find your administrator.
