Collaborate with Gemini in Google Chat

Feature availability:

If you have access to Ask Gemini in Google Chat, you can access Gemini collaboration capabilities with Ask Gemini. Learn more about Ask Gemini in Google Chat.
If you have an eligible Google Workspace edition and have access to Ask Gemini, you can also access Gemini in Google Chat. Learn about Gemini features and plans.

Note: If you have access to Ask Gemini in Chat, the side panel feature is removed.

Get started with Gemini in Chat

To summarize, generate action items, or answer questions about any space or conversation, use Gemini in Chat.

On your computer, go to chat.google.com.
- Open the Chat standalone app or Chat in Gmail.
At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
- Learn more about things to ask Gemini in Chat.

Select a suggestion

Select from the list of suggestions.
- To get more options, select More suggestions.
At the bottom, in the prompt box, replace the example text with the information that you want.
Click Enter.

At the bottom, in the prompt box, enter a prompt.
Click Enter.

Tips:

You can lose your conversation history when:
- You refresh your browser.
- You close and reopen Chat.
- Your computer goes offline.
To remove your conversation history, click More options Clear history.
- Note: To access and export your conversation history, you can use Google Takeout, even if you don’t have access to side panel in Google Chat. If you are unable to export your data, you may need to contact your administrator. Learn more about how to export my data.

Things to ask Gemini in Chat

While using Gemini in Chat, you can use Gemini to summarize, list action items, or answer specific questions about a conversation. In the side panel, you can use a prompt to collaborate with Gemini in Chat.

Answer questions about any conversation

While using Gemini in Chat, you can ask Gemini to search through your entire chat history to answer questions about a conversation.

In the side panel, you can ask specific questions about conversations from your chat history and find citations.
- Examples:
  - “What did [leader name] announce to the team yesterday?”
  - “What’s the decision on the project discussed in this conversation?"

Summarize a conversation

While using Gemini in Chat, you can use Gemini to search through your entire chat history to summarize a conversation.

In the side panel, you can prompt to ask for a summary or to summarize action items from your chat history.
- Examples:
  - "Summarize my unread messages."
  - "What are the key takeaways in this conversation?”
  - After an initial summary is generated, you can ask for a longer summary, "Give me a detailed summary of [topic] discussed in this space."

Summarize a file

You can use Gemini to summarize a file within a conversation if:

A message isn’t blocked.
File types shared as Drive links in Google Chat are:
- Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides
- .pdf
- .csv
- .txt
- Zip files
- Microsoft Office formats, like:
  - .docx (Word)
  - .xlsx (Excel)
  - .pptx (PowerPoint)
Download restrictions are off for the file.

To summarize a file:

On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
- In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
Select a direct message or space with a file in the conversation.
Under the file, click Summarize this file.

List action items

While using Gemini in Chat, you can use Gemini to list action items from any conversation.

In the side panel, you can prompt to ask for a list of action items.
- Examples:
  - "What are the action items in this conversation?”
  - “Are there any action items for me?"
  - “Summarize [person's] action items”

Give feedback on generated output

Google Workspace with Gemini is constantly learning and may not be able to support your request. Because feedback may be human readable, please do not submit data that contains personal, confidential, or sensitive information.

If you get a suggestion that’s inaccurate or that you feel is unsafe, you can submit feedback. Your feedback can help improve AI-assisted Workspace features and broader Google efforts in AI.

Below the generated output, select Good suggestion or Bad suggestion .
In the pop-up window, you can select the data you want to share along with your feedback, including prompts, additional context, and outputs. If you don’t want to share certain data, you can uncheck it.
- If you select Bad suggestion , select Next to select the issue you found and enter additional feedback.
Select Submit.

To provide general feedback about Gemini, at the top, click Help and then Send feedback to Google.
