Fix issues with "Hey Google" on a mobile device

If your Assistant doesn’t respond on your device, follow these steps to help fix the issue.

Before you start

Make sure your mobile device is connected to the internet with a strong signal. If you have connection problems, restart your device.

Step 1: Check for Google app updates

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, in the Google Play Store, go to the Google app page.
  2. Tap Update. If the page says "Installed," you already have the latest version.

Step 2: Check if the Google Assistant is turned on

The steps to fix "Hey Google" depend on whether the Google Assistant is turned on.

Important: Not all devices have the Google Assistant.

On your Android phone or tablet, touch and hold the Home button.

  • If you get a message that says "Hi, how can I help?": the Google Assistant is on.
  • If you don’t get this message: follow the steps for "Without Google Assistant."
  • If your device asks you to turn on the Google Assistant: Tap Turn on.

Important: If you have a Pixel phone, to use “Hey Google,” turn on the Google Assistant. Learn more about your Google Assistant.

Step 3: Turn on "Hey Google"

With Google Assistant
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, touch and hold the Home button.
  2. At the bottom right, tap Explore & Your stuff.
  3. At the top right, tap your profile picture or initial​.
  4. Tap Settings and then Assistant.
  5. Under "Assistant devices," select your phone or tablet.
  6. Turn on Google Assistant.
  7. Turn on Hey Google.
  8. If you want "Hey Google" to automatically unlock your device, turn on Lock screen personal results.
Without Google Assistant
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google app Google app.
  2. At the top left of the Home screen, tap Menu Menu  Settings and then Voice and then Voice Match.
  3. Turn on Access with Voice Match.
  4. To let “Hey Google” automatically unlock your phone when it hears your voice, turn on Unlock with Voice Match.

Step 4: Check your Assistant's language

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, touch and hold the Home button.
  2. At the bottom right, tap Explore & Your stuff.
  3. At the top right, tap your profile picture or initial and then Settings and then Assistant  and then Languages.
  4. If you need to, change your Assistant’s language:
    1. Tap your current language.
    2. Choose a new language to use with your Assistant.

Step 5: Turn off Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Settings app Android Settings.
  2. Tap Battery:
    • Battery Saver: Tap Battery Saver and then Turn off now.
    • Adaptive Battery: Tap​ Adaptive Battery and then Turn off Adaptive Battery.

Step 6: Teach Google to recognize your voice

Tip: To get the best results, record in a quiet place and speak like you would in normal conversation.

Devices with Google Assistant
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, touch and hold the Home button.
  2. At the bottom right, tap Explore & Your stuff.
  3. At the top right, tap your profile picture or initial and thenSettings and then Assistant.
  4. Under "Assistant devices," select your phone or tablet.
  5. Turn on Google Assistant.
  6. Tap Voice model.
    • If you don’t find “Voice model,” you have an earlier version of the Google app.
  7. Tap Delete voice model and then OK.
  8. Turn on Hey Google.
  9. Follow the on-screen instructions to record your voice.
  10. To let "Hey Google" automatically unlock your phone when it hears your voice, turn on Lock screen personal results.
Devices without Google Assistant
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google app Google app.
  2. At the top left of the Home screen, tap Menu Menu and then Settings and then Voice and then Voice Match.
  3. Tap Delete voice model and then OK.
  4. Turn on Access with Voice Match.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to record your voice.

Step 7: Say "Hey Google"

To find if you fixed the issue, say "Hey Google." To make sure the Google Assistant picks up your voice:

  1. If you’re in a loud area, turn off background noise or go somewhere quieter.
  2. Say "Hey Google" like you would in normal conversation.
Tip: If "Hey Google" still doesn’t work, teach Google to recognize your voice again.
