Set up your Google Assistant car accessory

You can use the Google Assistant in any car that has a Bluetooth connection or AUX plug.

Tip: Not all Google Assistant devices work the same. For device-specific instructions, contact your manufacturer.

What you need

  • A car with a Bluetooth connection or AUX plug.
  • A phone with Google Assistant app version 9.61 or up.

Set up your car accessory

Use Bluetooth connection
  1. Plug the car accessory into your car’s socket.
  2. Turn on your car.
    • Make sure you find a blue animated light.
  3. On your phone, open Bluetooth settings.
  4. Pair your phone with your car accessory.
  5. Swipe through the cards.
  6. Tap Next.
  7. If asked, tap Bluetooth.
  8. Before starting the audio test, make sure your car’s audio system is set to correct output.
    Tip: In most cars, this setting is called "Bluetooth" or "Media."
  9. After you hear the test tone, tap Next and then Done.
Use AUX cable (recommended)
  1. Plug the car accessory into your car’s socket.
  2. Turn on your car.
    • Make sure you find a blue animated light.
  3. On your phone, open Bluetooth settings.
  4. Pair your phone with your car accessory.
  5. Swipe through the cards.
  6. Tap Next.
  7. If asked, tap AUX cable.
  8. Connect your car and car accessory with the AUX cable.
  9. Tap Next.
  10. Before you start the audio test, make sure your car’s audio system is set to the correct output.
  11. After you hear a test tone, tap Next and then Done.

Fix problems

Car accessory & phone won’t connect

After each of the steps, check if your car accessory and phone are connected.

  1. Unplug your car accessory, then plug it back in.
  2. On your phone, turn off Bluetooth, then turn it back on.
  3. Restart your phone.
Car accessory won’t respond
  1. If your car accessory won’t respond to your voice,on the device, press the button.
  2. If you don't hear a response after you press the button, in the car and on your phone, turn up the volume.
  3. If your car accessory still doesn’t respond, reset your device.
Reset car accessory
  1. On your phone, open Bluetooth settings.
  2. Tap your car accessory and then Forget.
  3. On the car accessory, press and hold the button until the lights turn off for a few seconds and then turn blue.
  4. On the car accessory, press and hold the button for about 12 seconds.
    • The lights turn off for a few seconds and then turn blue.
  5. For iPhone only:

1. On your iPhone, open the Assistant app Assistant (iOS).

2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or initial.

3. Tap Devices and then your car accessory and then Unlink this device.

No AUX input or Bluetooth

If your car doesn’t have an AUX input or Bluetooth playback, you can try Google Assistant car accessory with an FM transmitter or a cassette adapter.

Either equipment must be connected to your Google Assistant car accessory using the 3.5-mm output. Then select the AUX option during setup.

Use the Google Assistant on your car accessory

Use the button to control most actions on the Google Assistant car accessory.

Important: Not all Google Assistant devices work the same. For device-specific instructions, get manufacturer help for your Google Assistant device.

Control your accessory

  • Talk to the Google Assistant: Say "Hey Google" or hold the button.
  • Stop the Google Assistant: Press the button.
  • Get notifications: Say "Hey Google, read my notifications" or press the button on the accessory.
  • Answer or end a call: Press the button to answer a call. Press the button again to end a call.
  • Mute and unmute the microphone: Double press the button to mute. Double press the button again to unmute.
  • Ignore an incoming call: Hold the button.
