You can change the colour scheme of some screens and apps on your Android device and phone.
Important:
- Some of these steps work only on Android 13 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.
Some of these steps require you to touch the screen.
Turn Dark theme on or off
- On your phone, open the settings app.
- Tap Display.
- Turn Dark theme on or off.
Tip: Dark theme can make your screen easier to read and can save battery on some screens.
Stop Dark theme from automatic turn on
If you see a dark colour scheme but didn’t turn on Dark theme, it could be that Battery Saver is on. When Battery Saver is on, Dark theme may turn on automatically. On some phones, Battery Saver turns on automatically when the phone’s battery charge falls below a certain percentage, like 15%.
Stop battery saver from automatic turn on
Turn off Battery Saver
- On your phone, open the settings app.
- Tap Battery

Battery Saver Tip: You can't use Battery Saver in Light theme. If you want to use Light theme, you need to turn off Battery Saver.
- On your phone, open the settings app.
- Tap Battery
- Choose No schedule.
Fix issues with apps that show in Dark theme
Dark theme isn't available for all apps.
Important: When you turn on Dark theme for your device, or when Battery Saver is on, many apps will also use Dark theme.
To check an app’s theme settings:
- If Dark theme is on but an app is light, the app probably doesn’t offer Dark theme.
- If Light theme is on but an app is dark, it could be that:
- Dark theme is on for the app, but not for the whole device. To check, open the app’s settings and find 'Theme' or 'Display' options. Specifics vary by app.
- The app uses a dark colour scheme, and it can’t be changed.
Change the colour scheme
When you change the colour scheme, you can choose the wallpaper style and change the colour of your tabs to a colour scheme that you like.
- On your phone, go to the Settings app.
- Tap Wallpaper and style.
- To change the colour palette of your wallpaper, tap Wallpaper colours and select the colour palette that you like.
- To change the colour of your tabs to a specific colour, tap Basic colours and select the colour that you like.
