Work with segments, filters, and users

Segments and filters let you restrict the data shown in the visualization according to certain selection criteria. Filters apply to the current visualization. Segments, on the other hand, can be shared between reports and analyses. You can share segments with other people, as well, whereas filters can't be shared.

Create filters

  1. Drag dimensions and metrics from the Variables panel to the Filter control in Tab Settings. Alternatively, click the Filter control and select the field from the popup list.
  2. Select a filter condition from the list. Your choices vary depending on the type of field (dimension or metric) you're filtering on.
  3. Type a condition to complete the filter criteria.

You can add multiple filters to the Tab Settings. Multiple filters are ANDed together (all conditions must match).

Apply segments

Drag segments from the Variables panel to the Segment control in Tab Settings.

You can add multiple segments to the Tab Settings. To visualize how multiple segments relate to each other, use the Segment overlap technique.

Create new segments from your data

If your analysis shows an interesting data point, you can save that as a segment or audience:

  1. Right-click on the data on the canvas.
  2. In the popup menu, click Create segment from users or Build audience from users.
  3. If desired, edit the segment name, then click SAVE.

Your new segment is applied to the analysis, unless it already has the maximum number of segments applied.

View users

The User explorer report lets you isolate and examine individual rather than aggregate user behavior. To use this report to view the users that make up the data points in your analyses:

  1. Right-click on the data on the canvas.
  2. In the popup menu, click View users.
  3. The User explorer report appears, populated with the users that contributed to that data point.

Learn more about the User explorer report.
