What are Google Alerts?
Google Alerts are emails sent to you when Google finds new results -- such as web pages, newspaper articles, or blogs -- that match your search term. You can use Google Alerts to monitor anything on the Web. For example, people use Google Alerts to:
- find out what is being said about their company or product.
- monitor a developing news story.
- keep up to date on a competitor or industry.
- get the latest news on a celebrity or sports team.
- find out what's being said about themselves.
Here's how it works:
- You enter a query that you're interested in.
- Google Alerts checks regularly to see if there are new results for your query.
- If there are new results, Google Alerts sends them to you in an email.
For general queries like [ football ], you can get a summary of the new results every day. For specific topics, like [ cardiovascular atherosclerosis ], you might not get an email every day, but you'll find out when something new and relevant is published. After visiting the Google Alerts home page, here's what to do:

3. Confirm the alert you have created
If you aren't signed in to a Google Account when you create an alert, Google will send you a verification email to prevent spam. Go to your email inbox, open the verification email and click the verify link to confirm your alert. If you can't find the verification email, check your spam folder.
If you are signed in to a Google Account when you create an alert, you don't need to confirm it.
That's it! Your alert is active, and you'll receive an email whenever Google Alerts finds new results for your search. Each email you receive contains a link to delete the alert, so you can cancel any time you want.
You may have noticed that Google Alerts has several other settings to help you customize your updates. Learn more about the "Type," "How often" and "Email length" fields in the "Advanced Options" section.
- Try to be as precise as possible. The more precise your search terms are, the more relevant your alerts will be.
- Use quotes around a group of words if you are looking for them together. Examples:
- "white house"
- "Mike Smith"
- Put quotes around a single word to match that word precisely as you typed it, excluding synonyms and spelling variations. Examples:
- "foard" (to stop Google including results for Ford)
- Michael "Jacson" (to stop Google including results for Michael Jackson)
- Use a minus sign (-) in front of words that you want to exclude. Examples:
- paris -texas
- apple -fruit
- Use the site: operator to limit your search to specific sites. Examples:
- physics site:.edu
- congress site:nytimes.com
- Use the site: operator with a dash to exclude specific sites. Example:
- "joe bloggs" -site:twitter.com
- Monitor a product: Enter a product name in quotes to receive a daily email with the latest news, blogs and web results about your product. Example: [ "Google Alerts" ]
- Find out what's being said about you: Enter your full name in quotes to receive an email when news stories, blogs or web pages mention your name. Example: [ "Joe Bloggs" ]
- If you have a common name, you can use negative terms to remove irrelevant results. For example, if you have the same name as a professional football player, try adding -football to your query. Example: [ "Joe Bloggs" -football ].
- If you get a lot of results from a site that you aren't interested in, you can exclude results from that site. For example, if you don't want results from twitter.com, add [ -site:twitter.com ] to your query. Example: [ "Joe Bloggs" -site:twitter.com ].
- Keep up with the news: to get a daily email full of news on a topic you're interested in, enter the topic in quotes. Example: [ "global warming" ]
- If you only want results from newspapers, change the "Type" field from "Everything" to "News".
- If you want more results, use the "Email length" field to increase the number of results in each email.
- If you want results as soon as possible, change the "How often" field from "once a day" to "as-it-happens". You may receive multiple emails per day with this setting.
Choose a delivery rate
Google Alerts allows you to choose how often you receive alerts. The default is once a day: Google Alerts checks for new results once per day and emails you if it finds new results. This means that you will receive at most one email per day for this alert.
If you want to get more frequent emails, you can change this to "as-it-happens". If you want to receive less frequent emails, you can change this to "once a week."
Set the volume
The "volume" setting determines how many results you see in each alert. In the default setting, "Only the best results," Google Alerts tries to filter the results so that they are relevant to your query and high quality. If you select "All results," you'll receive all the results that Google Alerts finds for your search terms, without any filtering to remove results which are low quality or less relevant.
Choose a specific source
The default alert type is Everything. Everything alerts include results from Google Web Search, Google Blog Search and Google News. If you are only interested in one type of results, you can select a single alert type.
Deliver to RSS feed
Users with Google Accounts can have their alerts delivered via RSS feed. Simply sign in and choose the "Feed" option in the "Deliver to" field.
You can read your feed in any RSS feed reader. Developers and feed readers can receive real-time updates by subscribing to the feed using the PubSubHubbub protocol. This allows applications to be notified of new alerts as they become available.
"Manage your Alerts" page
You can manage alerts for more than one email address by adding your other email address to your existing Google Account. To add an email address to your Google Account, visit your Google account page and use the "Email addresses" section.
You can get a list of all your alerts in CSV format by visiting www.google.com/alerts/export, or by visiting the "Manage your Alerts" page and clicking Export alerts. At this time, it isn't possible to import this list of alerts to a Google Account. You can, however, use the list as a reference to manually set up the same alerts in another account.
Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum number of alerts I can create?
You can create up to 1000 alerts. Please remember that you can only have up to 10 unverified alerts at any given time.
Can I subscribe to alerts in multiple languages?
Yes you can. Once you set your language preferences, you can visit the Google Alerts homepage and create alerts in that language. If the Google Alerts homepage appears in English, then chances are that the language you selected is not yet supported. We are continuously working on adding support for additional languages.
I'd like to receive Google Alerts in plain text rather than HTML. Can I do that?
Yes. To change the format of your emails from HTML to plain text, you'll need to sign in to your Google Account and go to the "Manage your Alerts" page. Please note that Video Alerts require you to receive email in HTML format.
Can I change my email address and still get Google Alerts?
Yes. We recommend that you associate your new email address with your Google Account. To add an email address to your Google Account, visit your account page and edit the "Email addresses" section. You can then go to the "Manage your Alerts" page, select the checkbox next to each alert and use the "Send to" option to change the email address they are delivered to.
My alerts have been disabled due to spam reports or delivery failures. What does this mean?
If Google Alerts is repeatedly unable to deliver your alerts to your email address, your alerts will be disabled. A message indicating that your alerts are disabled will be displayed at the top of the "Manage your Alerts" page. You can re-enable your alerts by clicking on the "Enable" button.
There are a number of reasons why your alerts may be disabled:
- Spam reports: Your email account provider is identifying emails from Google Alerts as spam and is not delivering them. Contact your email administrator to have Google Alerts excluded from spam filtering. If you use Gmail, add email@example.com to your contacts to prevent your alerts being marked as spam.
- Delivery failures: Emails to your address are unable to be delivered. This may be due to any number of causes, including an incorrect email address, an error in your email provider’s configuration, or a full inbox.
Why am I not able to sign in on the Google Alerts homepage?
If you're seeing an error message "username and password do not match," please check to make sure you're using the correct email address.
If you've requested password assistance and you receive a message that there's no Account in our system with your email address, this means that you don't have a Google Account registered to that email address. If you're receiving alerts at that address, don't worry, this isn't a bug; many users receive Google Alerts without ever creating a Google Account. If you'd like to cancel those alerts, you can do so by clicking on the delete link at the bottom of the alert emails.
I've set up lots of Google Alerts, but suddenly I'm getting a message that says I have too many unverified alerts.
You can create up to ten alerts at a time using the Google Alerts home page. Once you confirm your alerts, you can create more. To view and manage all your Google Alerts in one place, you may want to use a Google Account.
I'm receiving Google News or Web Clips alerts on my desktop, how can I make them stop?
Google Alerts only provide email messages to recipients and does not provide desktop notifications. We suspect that you're using Google Desktop, which has a "Customized Alerts" feature that displays News, Web Clips, and Email alerts on your desktop. My alerts are no longer being delivered. What has happened?
There may be a number of reasons why you aren't receiving your alerts:
- There are no new results for your search. Google Alerts only sends you an email if new articles, webpages or blog posts are found.
- Your alerts are being identified as spam by your email system's spam filter. Check your account's spam or junk mail folder for an email from firstname.lastname@example.org. If you're using Gmail, for example, please make sure you've added email@example.com email address to your Contacts list, as Gmail always delivers messages from your contacts.
