Set up cross-account Conversion Tracking

To use cross-account conversions, you’ll need to have more than one AdWords account and a My Client Center (MCC) account that’s linked to those accounts.

If you haven’t yet set up conversion tracking before, don't worry. We’ll help you with the steps below.

Step 1: Create cross-account conversions within a My Client Center account
To create cross-account conversions, you’d sign into your My Client Center Account and follow the steps in our Setting up conversion tracking FAQ.
When adding the new code snippet you’ve create to your website, be sure to leave your old code snippets for the number of days in your chosen conversion window, or you could lose some conversions -- specifically, those generated from clicks that happened before these changes.
Step 2: Choose your client accounts
Once you’ve created cross-account conversions for your accounts and tagged your website with the new code, you can let your client accounts use these conversions. Just keep in mind:
  • Before changing any conversion accounts, make sure that you’ve already added the necessary tags to your website. Otherwise, conversions won’t be recorded.
  • To verify cross-account conversions, make sure you've chosen one or more client accounts to use your MCC account's cross-account conversions, and that at least one conversion is recorded in a client account.

Ready to set up? Follow the steps below to let your client accounts use cross-account conversions:

  1. Sign in to your My Client Center account.
  2. Click the Conversions link on the left side of the page.
  3. Click All conversions.
  4. Click the Manage accounts tab.
  5. Find the accounts for which you’d like to use to cross-account conversion tracking.
Manage a lot of accounts? You can create and use filters to quickly sift through your accounts to find the ones you’re looking for. Just click the Filter button on the Manage accounts tab. You can also find accounts using the search box next to the button.
  6. Check the box next to the client accounts to which you’d like to make changes.
When choosing your accounts, remember that any account can’t simultaneously use account-specific conversions and cross-account conversions. It can use only one or the other. (You can switch between the two without losing any conversions, though.) Also, if an account belongs to more than one MCC, it can only use conversions from one MCC.
  7. Click the Change conversion account drop-down button. Select “To this MCC account” to change the conversion account -- the account where conversions are recorded.
  8. If correct, click the Make changes button on the confirmation page. You’ll now see your changes in the “Conversion account” column.

Disabling cross-account conversion tracking

A client account can switch back to using its account-specific conversions again instead of cross-account conversions.
Before switching conversion management back to a client account, make sure that the code snippets belonging to those conversions are still on the relevant webpage.

For example, you might have removed these code snippets when you created a cross-account conversion. If that’s the case, the client account will need to generate new code snippets and add them to the site.

You'll also want to leave the code snippet for the cross-account conversion as long as the number of days in your chosen conversion window. That'll prevent any conversions from being lost during the transition.

Switch back to account-specific conversions from an MCC account
You can switch back to using account-specific conversions from either an MCC or client account. (If you want to switch back to using cross-account conversions, you need to do that from within the MCC account.)
  1. Sign in to your My Client Center account.
  2. Click the Conversions link on the left side of the page.
  3. Click All conversions.
  4. Click the Manage accounts tab.
  5. Find the accounts you’d like to change to account-specific conversion tracking.
  6. Check the box next to the client accounts to which you’d like to make changes.
  7. Click the Change conversion account drop-down button. Select “To the client account” to change the conversion account.
  8. If correct, click the Make changes button on the confirmation page. You’ll now see your changes in the “Conversion account” column.
Disable cross-account conversions in a client account
Your client accounts also can opt out of using your cross-account conversions at any time. (If they change their mind later, your client accounts can always contact you, the MCC account manager, to have them enabled.)

Have your clients follow these steps if they’d like to disable cross-account conversions.

  1. Sign in to your AdWords account.
  2. Click the Tools tab at the top of the page and select Conversions.
  3. Click All conversions on the left side of the page, and then the Settings tab.
  4. In the “Conversion account” section, check the box that says “Stop using your My Client Center account manager’s conversions and use your own conversions.”
  5. Click Save.
