Tip

If you've just created or changed an ad, remember that it might need to be reviewed and approved by Google before it’s eligible to run. You can see whether your ad is under review by looking at the "Status" column of your account's Ads tab.

Find your ad without affecting its performance

We know it's tempting, but it's best to resist the urge to search for your own ad on Google.com. Here's why:

  • By performing searches that trigger your ad, you'll rack up impressions without clicks, which can lower your clickthrough rate and prevent your ad from appearing as often as it should.
  • If you repeatedly look for your own ad using Google search but never click on it, you might stop seeing it entirely. That's because Google's system stops showing you ads that it thinks you aren't interested in.

Use the Ad Preview and Diagnosis tool to find your ad

Instead of searching for your ad on Google, use the Ad Preview and Diagnosis tool to see where your ad appears in search results for a particular search term. This is an easy way to check how your ad appears in context, and the tool provides the same results as a Google search, without accumulating any impressions. Also, the Ad Preview and Diagnosis tool will tell you if your ad isn’t showing and why, so you can make any changes and begin reaching customers.

Keep in mind

  • The Ad Preview and Diagnosis tool only finds ads on the Google Search Network. Because of the large quantity of websites, videos, and apps in the Display Network, you won’t be able to locate your specific ad on the Display Network. To see if your Display Network ad is running, check your account statistics to verify that your ad is being shown.
  • There may be some formatting differences between your ad in the Ad Preview and Diagnosis tool and your ad in live search results. For example, if your ad appears above search results, your display URL might be placed alongside your headline, instead of beneath it. Also, your ad extensions might not always display in the Ad Preview and Diagnosis tool. You can verify that your extensions are running with your ad by checking your statistics on the “Ad extensions” tab.
How to use the Ad Preview and Diagnosis tool

To get the most out of the Ad Preview and Diagnosis tool, access it through the Tools tab in your AdWords account. Here’s how:

  1. Once you’re logged in to your account, click the Tools tab and select Ad Preview and Diagnosis.
  2. Use the Ad Preview and Diagnosis tool
  3. In the text box, enter the keyword you want to test. Make sure it’s a keyword that’s included in your campaign, or closely related.
  4. Change any of the other settings (location, language, device) as needed. If you’ve targeted your ad to a certain language, location or device, you’ll need to specify this information in order to be able to preview your ad.
  5. Click Preview.
  6. The tool will tell you if your ad is eligible to appear for these search settings. If your ad is eligible to show on the first page of Google search results, you’ll see it highlighted below in green.

Other ways to check if your ad is running

If you’re not finding your ad with the Ad Preview and Diagnosis tool, or if you just want to know if your ad is showing to customers, there are a few other ways to check if your ad is running.

Make sure your ad, ad group, and campaign are enabled

For your ad to run, the status of your campaign, ad group, and ad needs to be marked as enabled.

To check if your ad is enabled:

  1. Click the Ads tab for the campaign you’re interested in.
  2. In the second column, look for a green circle next to your ad. This means your ad is enabled and eligible to show. If you see a "paused" sign, your ad is not currently running.
  3. Change your ad status by clicking on the paused symbol and selecting the green circle from the drop-down.

Check if your ad group is enabled:

  1. Click the Ad groups tab for the campaign you’re interested in.
  2. As you did above, look for a green circle in the second column, next to your ad group.
  3. Update your ad group status as needed by clicking the drop-down.

Check if your campaign is enabled:

  1. Click All online campaigns in the side navigation.
  2. As you did above, look for a green circle in the second column, next to your campaign.
  3. Update your campaign status as needed by clicking the drop-down.

Check your account statistics to see if your ad is reaching customers

If your ad is running, then you should see statistics in your account showing detailed information about your clicks, impressions, clickthrough rate (CTR), and much more. Here’s how to check your account statistics:

  1. Sign in to your AdWords account, and click the Campaigns tab.
  2. On each tab, you'll see a table showing different statistics. You can use this information to make sure your ads are actually running and getting traffic.
  3. If it looks like you don’t have any statistics, your ad might not be running. Here are some things you can do to find out why:
    • Check to see if your campaign, ad group, and ads are enabled by looking for a green circle in the second column of the appropriate tab.
    • From the Ads tab, go to the "Status" column for each ad and click the speech bubble icon Speech bubble to see if your ad is showing and, if not, the reasons why.
    • Check the date range (in the top corner of your account) to make sure you’ve selected a long enough time period to reflect your ad’s performance.
    • Use the Ad Preview and Diagnosis Tool as explained above to identify why your ad might not be showing.

Visit the Keywords tab to make sure your keywords are triggering ads

Having the right keywords is essential in making sure customers see your ad. Here’s how to check that your keywords are triggering your ad to show:

  1. Click the Keywords tab for the campaign you’re interested in.
  2. In the "Status" column for each keyword, click the speech bubble icon Speech bubble to see if the keyword is triggering your ad to show.
  3. If a keyword isn’t triggering your ad, you’ll see the reasons why and a link to what you can do to improve your keyword performance. Some of the most common reasons include low Quality Score or low maximum cost-per-click bid.

Tip

If you’ve reviewed the above options and still aren’t sure why your ad isn’t running, check your account alerts.

The most critical alerts, such as those informing you that none of your ads are running due to outdated billing information, show in a red bar at the top of your account screen. Other important notifications, such as disapproved ads, are displayed in a preview bar near the top of your screen.

To view all of your notifications, click the bell icon in the top corner of your screen to produce a drop-down menu listing all of your messages.
