Create a non-customizable project from a template

​Ads Creative Studio includes a number of templates that you can use for creating a display project in the 21 most common ad sizes. The provided templates give you a starting point for building an ad with one message for everyone. You can view these templates by going to the Templates page from the left-hand navigation menu.

Follow the steps below to create a non-customizable display project from a template.

If you don't want to use a template, you can create your own rich media display ad instead.

Select a template

1. Sign in to Ads Creative Studio.
2. On the Projects page, click NewDisplayFrom template.
3. Review the available templates and choose the one that suits your needs best. Click a template to get more details, like which devices it can run on and what assets it supports. You can also see a preview with assets from a fictitious brand.
4. When you've found the template you want, click Use template.
5. Enter a name for the new project.
6. Select No for Customizable.
7. Click Create. This will create a new project with a single variant in 21 of the most common ad sizes.

Change an existing template

If a template doesn't quite meet your needs, you can open and edit Ad Creative Studio's display templates with Google Web Designer. After you make edits, you can upload the edited template as a display project using HTML5 files.

To edit a template:

1. Before you get started, make sure you've installed Google Web Designer.
2. Sign in to Ads Creative Studio.
3. Click Templates.
4. Find and click the template you want to edit. The "About this template" page opens.
5. Click Open in Web Designer. (If you don't see this button, the template is not available for editing.) A browser dialog will open asking permission to open the Google Web Designer app.
6. Click Open Google Web Designer. Google Web Designer will open to the Create New File From Template page.
7. In the left-hand panel, fill out these fields:
   1. Size - If multiple sizes are available, select the size you want.
   2. Name - Name your new file.
   3. Location - Optionally, change the location where the file will be saved. You can either enter the path to the location, or click the folder icon to navigate to the location you want to use.
8. Click Create.
9. Edit the template as you see fit. When you're done, publish your files locally in Google Web Designer.
10. Upload the published HTML5 files to Ads Creative Studio.

Currently, you can only edit a template locally, then upload it as a display project. In the future, you'll be able to upload a custom template to Ads Creative Studio, then re-use it to build multiple projects.

Choose sizes

The display templates in Ads Creative Studio support 21 of the most common display ad sizes:

• Square and rectangle: 250 × 250, 300 × 250, 320 × 320, 336 × 280
• Skyscraper: 120 × 600, 160 × 600, 300 × 600, 300 × 1050
• Leaderboard: 468 × 60, 728 × 90, 800 × 250, 970 × 90, 970 × 250
• Mobile: 300 × 50, 300 × 100, 320 × 50, 320 × 100, 320 × 480, 360 × 592, 360 × 640, 375 × 667

When you make a new display project from a template, all of the sizes the template supports are selected.

• If you want to use and export all available sizes, skip to the next step.
• If you don't want to use all of the sizes, remove the ones you don't need.

 

Add sizes

If you're using a default template and you removed some of the supported display sizes, you can add them again at any time. If all of the supported sizes are already added, you won't be able to add more.

1. Next to Dimensions, click the Select creative sizes menu. It's a drop-down menu that shows the current number of sizes (for example, "8 sizes"). The size selection window opens. On the left side, the sizes are organized in groups. On the right side is a list with each selected size.
   • To add all of the sizes the template supports, click All sizes.
   • To add a group of similarly shaped ads, click the group to add. (Size groups include: square and rectangle, skyscraper, leaderboard, and mobile.)
   • To add just one size (for example, 300 × 100), you can expand the groups on the left and select the checkbox next to 300 × 100.
2. Click Apply to confirm your size selections.
3. Click Save.

The preview will update to show the sizes you selected. When you export your project, only the sizes you chose will be exported.

If you modified the template with Google Web Designer and added support for more sizes, you can also add custom sizes.

Remove sizes

1. Next to Dimensions, click the Select creative sizes menu. It shows the number of ad sizes for the project (for example, "21 sizes"). The size selection window opens. On the left side, the sizes are organized in groups. On the right side is a list with each selected size.
   • To remove all sizes, click All sizes.
   • To remove a group of similarly shaped ads, click the size group you want to remove. (Size groups include: square and rectangle, skyscraper, leaderboard, and mobile.)
   • To remove just one size (for example, 300 × 100), you can expand the mobile size group on the left and click 300 × 100. Or on the right, scroll down to the mobile sizes and click Remove 300 × 100.
2. Remove the sizes you don't need and keep the ones you do. If you remove one by mistake, you can add the sizes again later.
3. Click Apply. (If you can't click Apply, make sure at least 1 size is selected.)
4. Click Save.

The preview will update to show the sizes you selected. When you export your project, only the sizes you chose will be exported.

Add assets

Now that you've created your project and chosen which ad sizes you need, you can start adding assets.

Because some sizes give you less room to work with, you may want to use a different asset for those sizes. For example, you may want to use a shorter headline for the 120 × 600 and 160 × 600 sizes because they're narrower than most of the other sizes.

 

Add an asset to every size

When you start, all of the sizes are selected. Any asset you add will be added to every size. This is helpful when you're adding an asset that's the same across all sizes.

You can tell that all sizes are selected when the number of selected sizes matches the total sizes for the ad. You'll also see blue check marks next to each size in the preview.

1. If all of the sizes aren't selected, press and hold Shift, then click each size group until all sizes are selected.
2. In the Details panel, select the asset you want to add or change. For example, if you want to add a logo image, select "Logo".
3. Choose or add an asset depending on its type:
   • Images : Drag a file from your computer and drop it on Drop file here or click Browse to select an image from your computer or the asset library.
   • Text : Enter the text to display.
   • Links : Enter the destination URL. For some elements, enter the text to display as well.
   • Colors : Enter the hexadecimal color code and opacity percentage.
4. Click Save.

The preview will update to show the new asset.

Add an asset to one size or a group of sizes

1. In the preview, click the size dimensions (for example, 120 × 600) or anywhere in the card the ad preview is shown in. (Note: Clicking on the ad preview itself won't work.) A blue check mark is shown next to the selected size, and all other check marks will turn dim.
2. In the Details panel, select the asset you want to add or change. For example, if you want to add a logo image, select "Logo".
3. Choose or add an asset depending on its type:
   • Images : Drag a file from your computer and drop it on Drop file here or click Browse to select an image from the asset library.
   • Text : Enter the text to display.
   • Links : Enter the destination URL. For some elements, enter the text to display as well.
   • Colors : Enter the hexadecimal color code and opacity percentage.
4. Click Save.

The preview will update to show the new asset.

Different values in selected sizes

When there are different values for the same element between the selected sizes, you'll find "<Different values>" instead of the actual text or image names. If you edit an asset that shows this message, the different values will be replaced with the updated text or image in all of the sizes you currently have selected.

Preview

A live preview of each ad size is shown as you add assets. Use this preview to check asset sizes, text length, and colors as you edit.

Filter previews

If you're working with a lot of sizes, you may find it helpful to filter the live previews to show only certain sizes to compare them.

When you apply filters:

• Only the sizes that match your filter are shown in the live preview area.
• Hidden sizes still exist, but are hidden from view.
• You can only edit visible sizes.

Remove filters to hide sizes

1. Find "Filter by", then click the Select creative sizes to filter by menu. It shows the number of filtered sizes (for example, "21 sizes"). The size selection window opens. On the left side, sizes are organized in groups. On the right side is a list of currently selected sizes.
   • To hide a group of similarly shaped ads, click the group to hide.
   • To hide just one size (for example, 300 × 100), expand the mobile size group on the left and click that size. Or find the selected sizes on the right, scroll down to the mobile sizes, then click Remove 300 × 100.
2. Hide the sizes you don't want to see or edit right now and keep the ones you do want to see.
3. Click Apply. (If you can't click Apply, make sure at least 1 size is selected.)

Only the sizes you selected will be shown in the live preview. You'll only be able to edit these sizes. If you want to edit a size you've hidden

Add filters to show sizes

1. Next to "Filter by", click the Select creative sizes to filter by menu. It shows the number of filtered sizes (for example, "2 sizes").
2. Click All sizes.
3. Click Apply.

All sizes will be shown in the live preview, and can be selected and edited.
