How native works in Ad Manager

Native ads use different components and sizes than you may be familiar with in Ad Manager, as the following illustrates:

1. Native ad formats define the variables that make up a native ad. Variables comprise the content that will appear in the ad (such as Headline, Image, and Body Text). The publisher can choose from standard, system-defined ad formats, where the variables can’t be changed. Another option is to create your own custom native ad format, where you can define the variables you want to display. For example, you could define a custom native ad format for a promoted hotel listing, with variables like Neighborhood, Price, Rating, and so forth.

2. Native creatives have values for each variable of a native ad format. The trafficker provides values for each variable (such as “10 Makeup Tips” for the Headline). These variables make up the content of the native creative.

3a. Native styles (more common) within a native ad format define how native ads will look on different inventory segments, for both web and apps. A given native ad format may have many different styles. You can manage your styles’ HTML, JavaScript, and CSS within Ad Manager to shape how your native ads will look in different situations.

3b. Custom rendering (less common) is also available for advanced mobile app developers who want access to the raw components of their native ads in their own code. You use the Google Mobile Ads SDK to request native ads from your app. 

4. The native ad is served with the appropriate style for each impression.

Fluid ad size

Fluid is a native ad size that allows more flexibility when styling your ad. Ad Manager automatically sizes the ad by filling the width of the enclosing column and adjusting the height as appropriate (just like a regular HTML div on your site). Learn more about fluid sizes for native ads.
