Change who's saved & suggested as contacts

You'll see contacts suggested in some Google services, like when you start typing someone's name in a new email in Gmail. You can control who gets saved and suggested as a contact.

Who shows up as suggestions

  • People you've added to your contacts.
  • People you've interacted with in Google services are automatically saved to "Other contacts." You can stop automatically saving contacts at any time.

Control who's saved as contacts

Add contacts yourself
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open your Contacts Contacts.
  2. At the bottom right, tap Add Add.
  3. Enter the person's contact info.
  4. Tap Save.
Save contact info when you interact with people

You can decide if contact info is saved automatically in certain Google services from people you interact with, like:

  • People you've shared something with, like a document in Drive
  • People who are part of events, groups, or content with you, like a shared album in Google Photos

Start or stop saving automatically

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open your device's Settings app Settings app and then Google and then Google Account.
  2. At the top, tap People & sharing.
  3. Under "Contacts," tap Contact info saved from interactions.
  4. Turn Save contact info when you interact with people on or off.
  5. If you use Gmail, choose if Gmail saves contact info from people you email:
    1. On a computer, go to your Gmail settings.
    2. Under "Create contacts for auto-complete," choose an option.
    3. At the bottom of the page, click Save changes.

Change or remove contacts

To stop people from showing up as suggestions, follow the steps below to remove them.

Contacts you've added
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open your Contacts Contacts.
  2. Tap a contact.
  3. From here you can:
    • Change info: At the bottom right, tap Edit Edit. Make the changes you want. At the top, select Save.
    • Remove a contact: At the top right, tap More More and then Delete.
Contacts saved automatically
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open your Contacts Contacts.
  2. At the top left, tap Menu Menu and then Suggestions.
  3. Tap Add people you contact often.
  4. From here you can:
    • Change info: Tap Add to contacts. Make the changes you want. Tap Save.
    • Remove a contact: Tap Dismiss. To stop them from getting added back, follow the steps to stop saving automatically.
