Purchase an AI add-on

If you reach usage limits for generative AI features in Google Workspace, you might see an option to purchase an upgrade. This article explains how you can use your own payment method to buy an AI Expanded Access add-on and get higher access to advanced AI capabilities in Workspace.

How to purchase an AI upgrade

You might see a prompt to upgrade when using generative AI features in Workspace. Click Upgrade to use your own payment method to buy the AI Expanded Access add-on.


Note: Your administrator manages the option for users in your organization to buy add-ons. If this feature isn't turned on, you can't purchase an upgrade.

About your subscription

Who pays for the subscription?

This subscription is billed directly to the payment method you provide when you purchase the add-on.

How you get billed for this subscription

The subscription uses a monthly payment plan. You will get an invoice on the first of each month for the days the subscription was active in the previous month. You might need to pay a one-time prepayment in some cases when you first purchase the add-on.

We'll continue to bill your payment method on the first day of every month until you cancel your subscription.

If you cancel in the middle of a month, you're only charged for the days you used the service during that month. We'll charge your payment method on the first day of the following month.

Do you own the account and the data you create using the add-on?

No. Even if you pay for the add-on yourself, this is not a personal purchase. Your organization still owns your account and all data. The service follows the Google Workspace Terms of Service your organization accepted.

Manage your subcription

How to manage your subscription, view invoices, or update your credit card

Use the subscription management page to see your subscription. You can also click Manage billing to download past invoices and update your payment method.

Cancel your subscription

You can cancel your subscription at any time from your subscription management page. If you cancel your subscription:

  • You lose expanded access to generative AI features immediately after you cancel.
  • We'll charge your payment method on the first day of the following month.
  • You'll be billed only for the days you used the service during the previous month.
What happens if your payment fails?

If a payment is declined, your subscription will be suspended immediately, and you will lose higher access to the premium AI features. You will get an email and notifications in your subscription management page asking you to update your payment method. If you don't fix the payment issue, the subscription will be canceled automatically. Learn more about managing your subscription.

About admin control of your subscription

Can your company see that you purchased this subscription?

Yes, your organization's admins can see add-on purchases associated with your Workspace account.

Can your admin cancel your subscription?

Yes, your admin has the ability to view, manage, or cancel your add-on subscription you purchased with your work account at any time. If an admin cancels the subscription, you'll get an email notification explaining the change. You will receive a prorated bill for the days you used the service.

What happens if you leave the company or your account is suspended?

If your Workspace account is deleted, archived, or suspended by your admin, your AI Expanded Access subscription will be canceled automatically. You will be charged a prorated amount for the time you used it up to that date.

What if your company buys a license for you later?

If your admin later gives you a license for an add-on you purchased, your personal subscription will not cancel automatically. You must manually cancel your personal subscription from your management page. Admins will also be notified about the overlap so they can help with the cancellation.

What if your admin turns off the AI feature for the whole company?

If your admin turns off a specific Google Workspace app or AI service at the company level, your personal subscription will stay active and you will continue to be billed. However, you will not be able to use the disabled features. In this case, you should cancel your personal subscription.
