Manually update Poly VVX OBi Edition firmware

Google Voice supports OBi Edition firmware. OBi Edition firmware versions start at 6.3.0.0. Any earlier version is beta or uses UCS. When you purchase Poly desk phones to use with Google Voice, request OBi Edition firmware for the devices.

  • Recommended firmware version: 6.4.5.10011
  • Minimum supported version: 6.4.0.2

Do I need to manually update my firmware?

Google Voice for Workspace automatically updates Poly VVX OBi Edition desk phone firmware to the recommended version listed above. You must manually update the firmware on a device if:

  • The firmware on the device is older than the minimum supported firmware version.
  • The device has a MAC address that starts with the prefix 482567, and the firmware on the device is earlier than 6.4.3.10037.
  • The automatic firmware update failed for some other reason.

Firmware updates are initiated when the device is restarted. To manually update the firmware, you need physical access to the device.

Before you begin: Convert UCS firmware

If you have a VVX x50 desk phone that’s running UCS firmware version 5.9.6 or earlier, you must convert it to use OBi Edition firmware. Phones shipped after June 2022 aren't convertible. For details, go to VVX x50 Software Stream Conversion Guide (UCS to OBi Edition).

Step 1: Determine firmware format and device details

  1. Make sure you have access to the on-device web server from a computer on the same network as the phone and the device's IP address, which you can get from the device's Product Information screen.
  2. In a browser window, enter http:// followed by the device’s IP address.

    Example: http://192.168.0.101 (HTTPS is not supported.)

    If the device has not been onboarded to Google Voice, the default userid and password will be admin. If the device is onboarded, the password will be different. For help, contact Google Workspace support.
  3. Go to the Product Information section.
  4. Make note of the following details:
    1. Part number for the device
    2. Current firmware version
    3. If background updates are enabled or not

OBi Edition firmware is distributed in 2 different file formats, identified by the file suffix:

  • .sip.ld—Original Obihai firmware format shared by VVX models 150, 250, 350, and 450. Used for non-BGU-enabled devices.
  • .fw—Newer firmware format shared by the VVX 250, 350, and 450 models. Used for BGU-enabled devices.

Which format you use depends on whether or not the background update (BGU) feature is enabled. If BGU is enabled, the .fw firmware file format must be used. Otherwise, use the .sip.ld format. The BGU feature allows a desk phone to download a firmware update in the background. The phone remains operational while the firmware is downloaded, and the update is only applied once the phone is idle (not in a call). If BGU is not enabled, the firmware update takes the phone offline for several minutes.

Step 2: Manually update the firmware

Option 1: Update BGU-enabled devices

Follow these steps to install and update the firmware for BGU-enabled devices:

  1. Find and download the firmware for your Poly device. For details, go to the Poly support page.Remember that all BGU-enabled models use the same .fw file, so you can use the VVX 250 support page.
  2. Access your on-device web server.
  3. Click System Managementand thenDevice Update.
  4. Click Choose File and select the .fw file you just downloaded. Ignore the warning about providing an XML file.
  5. Click Update.

Once the device restarts, it will automatically update the firmware after the download completes.

Option 2: Update non-BGU devices

Firmware installation for non-BGU-enabled devices (including all VVX 150 devices) requires an XML configuration file. The actual firmware resides on an external web server. The configuration file holds a path to the directory on the web server where the .sip.ld files reside. The XML file looks like this:

<PHONE_IMAGES>
   <REVISION>
      <PHONE_IMAGE>
         <VERSION>6.4.3.10037</VERSION>
         <PATH>https://storage.googleapis.com/voice-deskphone/polycom/6-4-3-10037</PATH>
      </PHONE_IMAGE>
   </REVISION>
</PHONE_IMAGES>

The device uses the path specified in the XML configuration file to download the correct .sip.ld file.

  1. From the table, download the XML file that matches your firmware version:
    Version XML file URL (right-click to download)
    6.3.0.0 https://storage.googleapis.com/voice-deskphone/polycom/6-3-0-0/6300.xml
    6.3.1.0 https://storage.googleapis.com/voice-deskphone/polycom/6-3-1-0/6310.xml
    6.4.0.2 https://storage.googleapis.com/voice-deskphone/polycom/6-4-0-2/6402.xml
    6.4.1.1 https://storage.googleapis.com/voice-deskphone/polycom/6-4-1-1/6411.xml
    6.4.3.10037 https://storage.googleapis.com/voice-deskphone/polycom/6-4-3-10037/6-4-3-10037.xml
  2. After downloading the appropriate XML file, access your on-device web server.
  3. Click System Managementand thenDevice Update.
  4. Click Choose File.
  5. Select the XML file that you just downloaded.
  6. Click Update.

The device should restart immediately and start the download and update process, which can take several minutes.
