As an administrator, you can choose to store your covered data in a specific geographic location (the United States or Europe) by using a data region policy.
Which services and data are covered by a data region policy?
Primary data
Data region policies cover the primary data-at-rest (including backups) for these Google Workspace core services:
Google Workspace core service | Covered data |
Calendar | Event titles, descriptions, dates, times, frequencies, invitees, locations. Attached files from disk are added to Drive. |
Drive | All content uploaded to Drive—including the file body, text, embedded images, embedded drawings, and associated user-generated comments |
Forms | Text, embedded images, responses |
Gmail | Subjects, bodies, attachments, senders, message recipients |
Google Docs, Sheets, Slides | File body text, embedded images, embedded drawings, and associated user-generated comments |
Google Chat | Messages, attachments |
Google Keep | Note text and title, images, drawings and audio recordings |
Google Meet | Audio recordings in Drive. Meet messages are added to Drive if the call is recorded. |
New Sites | Text, embedded images, embedded site information, embedded HTML/CSS/Javascript |
Vault | Exports |
For data region settings, the Essentials edition supports Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Vault only.
Backups
Google Workspace maintains backups of primary data for disaster recovery and business continuity. In rare cases, Google Workspace uses backups to restore data and maintain high reliability.
These backups aren’t available to restore data upon customer request. Backups expire (are overwritten) on defined timelines.
Indices (Gmail and Calendar only)
Gmail and Calendar construct user indices based on information in their accounts, similar to an index in a library, which lists information about all the books the library has available. This index is used to serve user search queries in Gmail and Calendar.
Which regions can I select?
Region options include no preference, United States, or Europe.
What about other services and data types?
At this time, data region policies can’t be applied to customer data or data types not specifically stated above (such as logs or cached content).
Data region policies aren’t available with any editions or services not explicitly stated above.
