What editions does Google Workspace for Education offer?

Google Workspace for Education offers the following options for your organization:

Google Workspace for Education editions

  • Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals—A foundational suite of secure and easy-to-use tools — provided at no cost — that help improve collaboration, productivity, and class management. Provides access to apps like Google Docs, Classroom, Meet, Gmail, Forms, Chat and more.
  • Google Workspace for Education Standard—A paid edition that builds on the functionality of Education Fundamentals and helps you proactively protect your education institution from digital threats with advanced security and analytics tools.
  • Google Workspace for Education Plus—A paid edition that is our most comprehensive solution, including everything in Education Fundamentals and Standard and more, providing advanced security and insights and easy-to-use tools that enrich and personalize learning.
Can I have more than one edition at the same time?

You can choose from the Education Fundamentals, Education Standard, or Education Plus editions to meet the needs of your organization. You can add Teaching and Learning Upgrade to either Education Fundamentals or Education Standard to add functionality to your edition, such as enhanced video-communication features. 

How many licenses do I need to buy for paid subscriptions?
  • Teaching and Learning Upgrade—There is no minimum purchase requirement for Teaching and Learning Upgrade.
  • Education Standard and Education Plus—The minimum purchase requirement is based on your organization’s total student enrollment (including full and part time students). For example, if your school has 1,000 total student enrollment, you must buy at least 1,000 licenses. You can buy additional licenses for other users who might need accounts, such as staff and alumni. You get one staff license at no charge for every four student licenses.
Can I upgrade or downgrade between editions?

You can upgrade your subscription at any time. Paid editions are annual subscriptions. You can’t downgrade your edition until the end of your subscription term.

  • Education Fundamentals—You can add Teaching and Learning Upgrade or upgrade to Education Standard or Education Plus.
  • Education Standard—You can add Teaching and Learning Upgrade or upgrade to Education Plus.
  • Teaching and Learning Upgrade—If you have Teaching and Learning Upgrade along with Education Fundamentals, you can upgrade to Education Standard or Education Plus.
  • Education Plus—Includes all the features available in all Google Workspace for Education editions.

Note: Customers who are transitioning from a legacy edition are not eligible to transition to Education Plus until their renewal date.

How do I upgrade from one edition to another?

You must have an Education Fundamentals edition to upgrade to any of the other paid editions—Education Standard, Teaching and Learning Upgrade, or Education Plus. You can have Education Plus in combination only with Education Fundamentals, not with Education Standard or the Teaching and Learning Upgrade.

Education Standard and Education Plus are only sold through resellers. You can purchase the Teaching and Learning Upgrade in the Admin Console on a monthly, flexible billing model or through your reseller.

How does each edition handle student and staff licenses?
Education Fundamentals Provides 2,500 user licenses. There’s no difference between teacher and student accounts.
Education Standard Provides separate licenses for students and staff. Students and staff get the same features.*
Teaching and Learning Upgrade Adds tools and functionality to your existing Education Fundamentals or Education Standard account. There’s no difference between teacher and student accounts.
Education Plus Provides separate licenses for students and staff. *

* You get one staff license at no charge for every four student licenses.

How is Education Fundamentals different from G Suite for Education?
Education Fundamentals is the new name for the G Suite for Education edition. If your school uses G Suite for Education today, you don’t have to take any action to transition to Education Fundamentals. Your school's experience remains the same. The requirements to qualify for a Google Workspace for Education edition remain the same. 
Are there differences in storage across editions?
All Education editions give schools 100 TB of storage that’s shared across the institution. You can get additional storage with the Teaching and Learning Upgrade and Education Plus editions based on the number of licenses that you purchase. You can compare editions on the Google for Education website.
Does previously purchasing G Suite Enterprise for Education offer access to all Education Plus features?
Yes. If you had G Suite Enterprise for Education, you get the same features and functionality in Google Workspace for Education Plus.
In your Admin console, your subscription is listed as "Google Workspace for Education Plus - Legacy". In 2024, all G Suite Enterprise for Education customers will need to transition to Google Workspace for Education. Can I get a trial of the paid Google Workspace for Education editions?

Yes. You can get a 60–day trial of 50 licenses for Education Standard, Teaching and Learning Upgrade, or Education Plus. For details, contact an authorized Google Workspace partner. Visit the Partner Directory.

Start a trial of Teaching and Learning Upgrade in your Admin console

If you’re a super administrator for your organization and your account isn't managed by a reseller, you can start a free trial of Teaching and Learning Upgrade in the Google Admin console:

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

    Sign in using an account with super administrator privileges (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. In the Admin console, go to Menu and then Billingand thenGet more services.
  3. Click Google Workspace for Education.
  4. For Teaching and Learning Upgrade, click Start Free Trialand thenGet Started.
  5. Select Trial plan.
  6. Click Checkoutand thenPlace Order.
Your trial starts immediately, and you can assign licenses to your users. For details, go to Provisioning Google Workspace for Education Licenses.
Can I purchase the Google Workspace for Education paid editions directly from Google?

You can purchase the Teaching and Learning Upgrade in the Admin Console on a monthly, flexible billing model. Education Plus and Education Standard are sold through resellers.

How much does each Google Workspace for Education edition cost?

Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals is available at no cost for all qualifying institutions. Education Standard, Teaching and Learning Upgrade, and Education Plus are paid editions.

Customers in the U.S. and Canada can see prices and feature information for each edition on the Google for Education website.

Customers outside of the U.S. and Canada who want information on prices and features can contact our sales team.

Are there different tiers of pricing for students, faculty, and other staff?

No. Education Standard and Education Plus are priced by enrollment (per student). You get one staff license at no charge for every four student licenses. Your total student enrollment determines the minimum purchase requirement.

For Teaching and Learning Upgrade, you choose how many licenses to buy.

Do I get a discount if I sign a contract for a longer term?

Yes. If you commit to 2 or more years of Google Workspace for Education Plus, you can get a discount. For details, contact an authorized Google Workspace for Education partner. Visit the Partner Directory.

What is the duration of a paid Google Workspace for Education subscription?

Education Standard, Teaching and Learning Upgrade, and Education Plus are annual subscriptions with these exceptions:

  • You can purchase Teaching and Learning Upgrade as a monthly subscription.
  • You can commit to more than one year of Education Plus.

Can I purchase licenses for only some of my users?

For Education Standard and Education Plus, you must buy licenses equal to, or greater than, your total student enrollment. You get one staff license at no charge for every four student licenses.

You can buy any number of licenses for Teaching and Learning Upgrade.

Can I still buy G Suite Enterprise for Education?

G Suite Enterprise for Education is now Google Workspace for Education Plus. For pricing details, go to the Google for Education website. In 2024, all G Suite Enterprise for Education customers will need to transition to Google Workspace for Education. Introductory promotional pricing

Are G Suite Enterprise for Education promotional offers still available?

The introductory promotional offer for G Suite Enterprise for Education full-domain licensing ended on October 31, 2020. Full-domain licensing orders that were placed before this date qualified for a 50% discount on the list price and a three-year price lock.

Can I change resellers and keep the promotional price?
No. You must renew with the same reseller to keep the promotional price in years 2 and 3. You have the option to change resellers when you transition to a Google Workspace for Education paid edition.
