Configure an external recipient warning

When your users respond to an email message, the recipients may be external to your organization. You can set up external recipient alerts to protect your users from unintentionally sharing information externally.

Gmail detects if an external recipient in an email response is not someone a user interacts with regularly, or is not present in a user’s Contacts. When you configure this setting, your users receive a warning and an option to dismiss.

Configure the external recipient reply warning

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

  2. From the Admin console Home page, go to Appsand thenG Suiteand thenGmailand thenEnd User Access.

    Tip: To see End User Access, scroll to the bottom of the Gmail page.

  3. Select your top-level organization.
  4. Scroll to Unintended external reply warning.
  5. Toggle the checkbox to enable or disable this setting.
  6. Click Save.

It can take up to 24 hours for changes to propagate to user accounts. You can track prior changes in the Admin console audit log.
