Google Workspace for Education offers 2 categories of Google services:
- Google Workspace Core Services (like Gmail, Google Calendar, and Classroom) are the heart of Google's educational offering to schools.
- Additional Services (like YouTube, Google Maps, and Blogger) are designed for consumer users and can optionally be used with Google Workspace for Education accounts if allowed for educational purposes by a school’s domain administrator.
Google Workspace for Education administrators decide which Google services their users can access. Admins must provide or obtain consent for the use of the services by their minor users. When a school obtains appropriate consent, users can access some Additional Services without age restrictions.
Important changes to Additional Services
September 2021—Control services and features for users under 18
Control access to Google services by age
Starting in September, 2021, Google Workspace for Education admins can set access to some Google services based on age. If admins don’t identify users that are 18 and over:
- All users in primary or secondary institutions default to under 18 and get a restricted experience in some Google services.
- Users under the age of 18 also lose access to certain services.
- Higher education institutions have no default age-based restrictions. However, admins in those organizations are required to identify any users under the age of 18.
- Services without an On or Off control are set to Restricted for users not designated as over 18. You can’t change this setting for those users.

Control Voice Match and Face Match for Google Search and Assistant
Admins must get parental consent for users under the age of 18 to link their Google Workspace for Education accounts to a Google Assistant-enabled device to enable Voice Match and Face Match. However, Voice Match and Face Match are only enabled on a user’s device if they choose to enable the feature.
Voice Match creates a unique model of a users’ voice that Assistant uses to identify a user on any device where Voice Match is enabled. Face Match creates a unique model of a users’ face that Assistant uses to recognize a user on smart devices with a camera enabled.
Google Assistant uses Voice Match and Face Match to tell an enrolled user apart from other users. Depending on user settings, Assistant can use Voice and Face Match to personalize user experiences and results.
To turn Voice Match and Face Match on or off:
From the Admin console Home page, go to AppsAdditional Google services.
Click Search and AssistantVoice Match and Face Match
In the Voice Match and Face Match panel, choose On for everyone or Off for everyone.
To turn a service on or off for everyone in your organization, click on the Service status sectionselect On for everyone or Off for everyone.
It can take up to 24 hours to see changes. During this time, old and new settings might be intermittently enforced.
If you turn off Voice Match and Face Match:
- Users' Assistant-enabled devices will lose core features and capabilities. For example, Assistant will no longer recognize their voice and face, so your end users might not be able to access personal results (such as their calendar or reminders) on shared Assistant-enabled devices, such as speakers or smart displays. On some devices, such as phones, Google Assistant might no longer respond to “Hey Google.”
- Voice Match and Face Match models will be deleted from users’ Assistant-enabled devices. If a device isn’t connected to the internet, or if it’s not running the latest version of Google Assistant, the voice and face models might not be deleted immediately. In these cases, and on some older devices, users may need to factory reset their devices to delete their Voice Match and Face Match models.
- Enrollment Voice Match clips and Face Match images will be deleted from user accounts.
- If you change your mind, and turn on this setting again, users will have to re-enroll in Voice Match and Face Match. This means that they will have to give their consent to these features, record new voice clips to set up Voice Match, and take new photos of their faces to set up Face Match.
August 2017—Additional Google services disabled for older accounts
On August 1, 2017, Google disabled Additional Services for Google Workspace for Education school accounts created before April 22, 2016. If you have such an account and you don’t want these services disabled, you need to set up manual control for user access to these services. Unless you do, these services are automatically disabled.
You should have received an email directing you to an interstitial page to view your domain’s enabled Additional Services and to choose an option:
- Manage Services myself
If you select this option, we will not disable any of your Additional Services.
- Turn off the services specified above for all users
If you select this option, all of your domain’s Additional Services are disabled immediately. However, it can take up to 48 hours for the changes to activate.
- Turn off the services above for all users, except for Google Play
If you select this option, all of Additional Services except for Google Play are disabled immediately. However, it can take up to 48 hours for the changes to activate
For accounts that didn't select one of the 3 options above, Google disabled the Additional Services on their domain on August 1, 2017.
Once you’ve made your selection, the interstitial page is locked and you can't edit it. However, you can view the page to see which decision you’ve made.
- If your Additional Services were forcibly disabled on August 1, 2017, you can still re-enable any or all of these services again yourself manually. For new services that Google enables, please see New Products settings on the Admin console Company Profile page.
- If Google Play is disabled, admins can still send Android apps to managed Chromebooks. Learn more about turning Google Play on or off for users.
For users in primary or secondary (K–12) schools, Google does not use any personal information (or any information associated with a Google Account) to target ads.
