Limitations with multiple domains

When you add a domain to your Google Workspace or Cloud Identity account, keep in mind some limitations with secondary domains and domain aliases.

Tip: Google uses the name of your primary domain as the name for your organization. The organization name is referenced in the sharing options that users see. When you add domains, you might want to change your organization name to a more inclusive name.

Limitations with domain aliases

  • In the Admin console, you can add a domain alias only to your primary domain. To add a domain alias to a secondary domain, use the Directory API
  • Migration from domain aliases is not supported. Some current Google Workspace customers use domain aliases for their non-primary domains. Google does not currently support the conversion of domain aliases into multi-domain accounts.

Limitations with secondary domains

Account management

  • Settings: You can't directly set different policies or configuration settings for different domains. However, you can place users from each domain into separate organizational units, and then apply different policies to each organizational unit.

• Google DriveYou can't restrict sharing by domain. Sharing options are based on the organization or organizational units. Learn about sharing options.
  • You can specify only one logo for your domains. The same logo appears for users in all domains that are part of your account.
  • Google Workspace account merge is not supported. Some current Google Workspace customers with multiple domains have separate Google Workspace accounts for each domain. Google does not currently support merging multiple Google Workspace accounts into a single multiple domain account.
  • Migration from domain aliases is not supported. Some current Google Workspace customers use domain aliases for their non-primary domains. Google does not currently support the conversion of domain aliases into multi-domain accounts.

  • Google Workspace service URLs: You can't provide a global URL that users from all domains share. You must create custom URLs for your primary domain and each additional domain, for example, http://mail.primary_domain.com and http://mail.secondary_domain.com.

Google Groups

  • If a topic is posted to the wrong group, you can move it to any other group in the same domain. However, you can't move topics from a group in one domain to a group in a different domain. Learn more about moving topics between groups.

Google Sites

  • Secondary domains can't be redirected to a "naked" URL. See more about Setting up a naked domain address

  • Search results include only the sites in a user's domain. For example, a user with an address in a secondary domain will not find sites created in the primary domain.
