What is Google Sync?

Google Sync uses Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync 12.1 to let users synchronize their work or school mail, contacts, and calendars to their mobile devices. For example, iPhone and iPad users can sign in with Microsoft Exchange to get their work Gmail messages in the Apple Mail app and Google Calendar events in Apple Calendar. As an administrator, you can enforce security policies on those devices. For details, see Set up advanced mobile management.

Starting in Fall of 2024, Google Workspace accounts will no longer support Google Sync. For exact dates, visit Google Workspace Updates. You should transition your organization off Google Sync. To check which devices in your organization use Google Sync, in your Google Admin console, go to Devicesand thenMobile & Endpointsand thenDevices. At the top of the page, click + Add a filter and select Typeand thenGoogle Sync.

Prepare to transition away from Google Sync

Google Sync doesn’t support OAuth authentication, 2-factor authentication, or security keys, which leaves your organization’s data less secure. With more secure alternatives available, we recommend that you transition off Google Sync. For details, see Transition your organization off Google Sync.

Which devices support Google Sync?

Google Sync works with iOS devices. For user setup instructions, see Set up Google Sync for iOS.

Android doesn't require Google Sync because it connects to Google Workspace. For details, see the Learning Center.

Considerations:
  • Before enabling Google Sync with iOS devices, read Known Issues with iOS.
  • Setting up a new ActiveSync account on a user's device might remove existing data on the device. Back up the user's data before you set up Google Sync on the device.
