Spamming is not tolerated on YouTube. Spammers will be banned from the site and no longer allowed to create a new YouTube account.

What is Spam?

Spam is content that uses misleading descriptions, tags, titles or thumbnails in order to trick you into watching it. Most of the time this shows up on YouTube as massively posted messages that try to direct you to other sites.

Everyone hates spam. Don’t create misleading descriptions, tags, titles or thumbnails in order to increase views. It's not okay to post large amounts of untargeted, unwanted or repetitive content, including comments and private messages.

Mass advertising: When a user uses automated bots or massively posts content for advertising purposes.

Misleading text: When a user incorrectly identifies their videos within the title, tags and video description. This is done to trick the viewer into watching their video by being dishonest about the video content. Misleading text can also mean that an uploader has used the video description area to put in many different tags that don't match the video content to try to gain views.

Misleading thumbnails: When a user deliberately chooses a thumbnail that is not representative of the actual video content in order to gain views.

Scams/Fraud: When a user posts a video which contains information to trick the viewer for their own financial gain.

What is Phishing?

Phishing is when someone tricks you into giving them your personal information such as credit card numbers, social security/national ID numbers, or other financial data. Usually when they have that information, they'll then use it to steal your money, property or identity. Remember, Youtube will never ask you for your password, email address, or other account information. Don't be fooled if someone contacts you pretending to be from YouTube!

If you find videos on YouTube that you think might be spam or phishing, please flag them for review by the YouTube team.

Tips on spam from the Australian Communications and Media Authority

Spam is electronic ‘junk mail’–unwanted messages, advertising products and services, sent to your email address or mobile phone.

Some spam promotes a product or invites you to visit a website. Other spam tries to scam or trick you into investing in fraudulent schemes or revealing your bank account or credit card details.

An electronic message is spam if:
it is unsolicited or sent without your consent
it does not contain accurate information about the sender of the message
it does not provide a way to unsubscribe from receiving more messages or it does not action an unsubscribe request within five working days.

To avoid spam:
Check if your internet service provider has a spam filtering service.
Use spam filtering software.
Understand how your email address will be used before providing it online
Check the terms and conditions of anything you sign up for. Are you consenting to receive commercial electronic messages?
Do not respond if the email seems dubious. Never click on links in spam emails or buy spam-advertised products or services as many are fraudulent.
If you are not sure if the message sender is genuine, contact SCAMwatch.
If you know the message sender and you do not wish to receive further email, use the unsubscribe facility.
If you receive a commercial electronic message to your mobile phone, reply with ‘STOP’.

Tips from cybersmart

Watch your bank account. Respond immediately to any unexpected withdrawals or spending. Look out for small amounts of money being withdrawn unexpectedly. This may be a criminal testing your account details prior to withdrawing a larger amount.
Don’t get phished. Don’t respond to calls or emails from any bank asking for passwords or other details. Banks never send emails asking you to click through to their site—if the email asks you to click on a link, chances are it’s a scam. If you receive a call from someone saying they’re from the bank, hang up and call back at the publicly listed number to see if it’s real.
