Create ad units

Ad unit naming conventions

In general, the ad unit names you create should address the following:

  • The page place within your site
  • The ad unit's place on a page
  • The ad unit size

You might name an ad unit SiteName_Section_SubSection_ATF_PagePosition_WxH, where ATF = Above the Fold, W = Width, and H = Height.

Other examples of ad unit names include the following:

  • ABCProductsUnlimited_HelpCenter_Tutorials_BTF_footer_728x90
  • ABCProductsUnlimited_Products_HotPick_ATF_skyscraper_90x728
  • MoreABCProducts_HelpCenter_FAQs_BTF_Right_90x90

Ad unit names can be up to 100 characters in length, and can include alphanumeric characters, hyphens, and underscores. Asterisks (*), colons (:), and blank spaces aren't supported in ad unit names.

You can't create two ad units with the same name but different capitalization.

The capitalization of ad unit names in your ad tags must match the capitalization of the ad unit names in your inventory.

Feel free to customize your naming convention to your site. (For example, if you only manage a single site, preceding your ad unit names with 'SiteName' would be extraneous.)
