Stuck in "I will be using this device" screen after factory reset

Hi, I had an Android 5 device and I was factoring resetting it because it was quite slow.

After that, I'm having the problem that it doesn't allow me to add a Gmail account anymore. When entering user/password it goes to the screen:

"Who will be using this device?

* I will be using this device
* My child will be using this device

Next"

When clicking Next after selecting any of those options, nothing happens. It just clicks the button but the page doesn't change.

I've tried factory reset it again and with different accounts but still same problem.

Any idea what the issue is now and how to pass this screen?

Hi User1225xxxxxxxxxxxx.  It might be best to give the device manufacturer's customer service a call for advice.  Android 5 is pretty old now but I do have a tablet running Lollipop and it's still usable. Following a reset I have never seen the questions you're seeing on the screen during setup so it may manufacturer specific.

Factory resetting can cause all kinds of issues particularly with your Google account as you will have wiped the identification markers Google's system uses to associate a device with a particular account.  Are you able to access the account on another device?  It's never wise to use just one with your account just in case you do get locked out.

I'm sorry not to be more positive and do let us know what the device manufacturer has to say.

Regards, Penny

[SOLVED]

Managed to sort it out... but took pretty much a whole day messing around. At high level, these were the steps:

Install Android 5 compatible versions of the following:
  • Google Play Store
  • Google Play Services
  • Chrome

At some point the Sign In screen changed to a screen with three dots on the top right where I could click 'update' apps (without having to sign in)

Did this for all available apps, restarted and eventually it allowed me to Sign In without displaying that page of 'who will be using this device?' anymore.

Easier said than done though, 'cos for installing the apps I had to create a WebDAV server to put the APKs, had to use 'adb' commands to install them etc, but got there in the end!

Pretty sure this will break again on future Factory Reset of old devices, so putting the info in a few places I was asking in case it helps other people later on.

Cheers

I have the same problem with an old 2013 Moto G XT1028 on 5.1.  What versions did you use?  I tried downloading the newest Google Play Services APK I could find, but it would hang the device and couldn't be disabled/uninstalled, something to do with Administrator privileges so I had to factory reset again.

I have the same problem. I can't get past the non-functional Next button in the "I will be using this device" screen. I tried manually installing APKs for google store, services, chrome, etc, but adb told me they were already installed. I have no idea what to do. I can't get access to the play store to try updating things normally.
