Create a CPRA message

After you add your sites to AdSense, complete the following steps to create the CPRA message that you want to display to the eligible California users of your sites.
Make sure that you've placed the AdSense code on your site.
  1. Sign in to your AdSense account.
  2. Click the Privacy messages tab.
  3. Click CPRA.
  4. Click Create message. The 'Edit message' page opens.
  5. Click Select sites and select the desired sites.
  6. Click Confirm.
  7. Select the default language in which this message will be displayed. You can choose from English, Spanish or Spanish (Latin America). 
  8. In the 'Message name' field, enter a descriptive message name that will help you identify the message later. The name is shown only in the Privacy & messaging page and won't be visible to users.
  9. (Optional) Edit and format the message to match your site's editorial and visual standards.
  10. Click Save draft
  11. When you’re ready, publish the message.
The CPRA privacy message doesn't support Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP). If you turn on this feature, it displays a privacy message on your site, but it doesn't show a message on the AMP version of your site.

Creating a CPRA message in Auto Ads

Complete the following steps to create a CPRA message that can be displayed on sites that use Auto Ads.

  1. Click Ads.
  2. Click Edit for the site on which you want to display a message. 
  3. Click Privacy & messaging.
  4. Click CPRA. The message builder page will open. If you already have one or more CPRA messages for this site, the most current message will be shown. If there are no previous messages for this site, a new message will be shown.
  5. (Optional) You may want to add a logo to your message.
  6. Click Save.
  7. When you’re ready, publish the message.

CPRA message settings

The following settings are available for CPRA messages within Privacy & messaging:

  • Restrict data processing: Choose whether you want to show personalised ads or non-personalised ads to users who are subject to CPRA.

    This setting will apply to users in California, Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut and Utah, USA.

  • Select ad partners: Select the ad partners (formerly 'ad technology providers') that you want to use to serve ads to users who are subject to CPRA.
  • Manage restricted data processing via ad requests: You can restrict data processing at an ad request level if you don’t want to restrict data processing across your account.
Note: If you choose to turn on the privacy message and override your 'Restrict data processing' setting, then you won't be able to customise the list of advertising partners. The sites for which you've set up the override will always use the default list of advertising partners.
