YouTube Music API 1 Recommended Answer 19 Replies 234 Upvotes

Spotify already has an API for a while now. It would be nice to see YouTube Music adding an API as well.

It would give users control over their music (Allow them to see what song is playing and allow to play, pause, and change music.)

Support for LastFM is already highly upvoted at the YouTube Music Help Community. With an API third-party apps like LastFM and Discord will able to integrate YouTube Music more easily.

Example of Discord showing the current song that I'm listening to:

YouTube Music has a lot of potential since it allows you to listen to non-label-tracks and has a lot of fan covers, mashups and concert clips. When it comes to amount of tracks I believe no other music streaming service can beat YouTube Music.

But when it comes to functionality / user experience YouTube Music should take a look at Spotify and try to work on offering at least as much they do. So there would be no need for considering using Spotify.

Are there any plans to support LastFM at all? This is kind of a deal breaker for a lot of people, I assume.

Another way for YouTube Music to add support for LastFM and Discord is by the means of a Desktop App.

A youtube music bot can be also a cool idea to add your whole playlist to the voice channel. It will make it easier to create playlist in youtube music and adding it to list and then others can add in with bot commands.

It would be great becuase then people could 1st off build a real desktop application in something like electron. Also people could add the features that are lacking and seem basic to me.

I get pretty good sound quality listening to Google Play Music via it's API at 320 kbps on a MoOde Audio system running on a Raspberry Pi with a DAC and plugged into an amplifier. It would be nice to get YouTube music at 320 kbps too instead of 256 kbps too but an API is even more important for me because without it I might as well cancel my subscription and move to Spotify, Tidal or Qobuz which I can get without any problem.

I can't believe that still today, there isn't a ytm api :/
As some friends are deciding to migrate to spotify, I should go as well

@google would be great to get some timeline for that  (even if it is a year from now) so that we are not just sitting and hopping for the best...:s

Hello,

I'm truly sorry, but there is currently no ETA or timeline for the implementation of this feature. The team knows that this is something that many wants, but the focus right now is on core functionality in order to phase out Google Play Music.

Please sit tight - the Discord implementation would be awesome!

Yours sincerely,
Vegar Henriksen
