Why are songs in Library>Device Files not loaded when I go to Songs? It takes 2-3 mins to load them 0 Recommended Answers 326 Replies 770 Upvotes

I have transferred from GPM to YTM and have a lot of music stored on my phone (OnePlus 8 Pro) that come from CD's. On GPM these songs were in my library mixed up with downloaded songs. In YTM if I go to Library>Device Files, it takes 2-3 mins to load them, why wouldnt they just be stored and always available as with GPM? It is like YTM searches the device every time. Same with Albums & Artists, in GPM they just show up but dont in YTM. Really not impressed.

I am using a Oneplus 7 Pro, I have enabled the option under Account > Settings > Library & downloads > Show device files (set to on or blue)
However, my device files NEVER (edit: sorry it just took 3 minutes of waiting, this is not feasible for everyday use).  Also when i hit shuffle all it eventually times out to a An error occurred and does not play anything

(note:  My full library shows up with no problems in GPM, with no delays)

So I tried this again just the other day to see if it was fixed... NOPE.

I found a MUCH better app.  Poweramp.
It's fantastic and actually will play my device files and is even better than GPM.

I came here to ask same question why if inwant to listen to a song on my phone that will play quickly from play music do i have to wait 3 minutes for my songs to load every single time i open the app. There are no google software engineers that can program YouTube music to remember what music is on your phone. They did it for play find those people.

Same issue here (Samsung Galaxy S9+). Takes about a minute to list all my music and another 20-60 seconds to start playing a song. Hope this is resolved before GPM is done.

Oh my S20, I just waited for a minute (or more) for the "device files" list to populate, and then hit "shuffle" and then waited another minute just to get "An error occurred (Playback ID: _-J2jib5vPZ8SwA) RETRY". Also, my music is on a 64GB SD Card. GPM has no problem playing.

Same problem. It takes forever for it to play a song. I have a Pixel and the feature rolled out early for me so I thought it might've been because it was all new but no. Same issue after 2 months. With Google play music coming to an end this month, I think we need to fix this problem.
That aside, some albums aren't even available day one after release on YouTube music but on the Google Play music app it is. That's bizarre for an app that is being discontinued.

"Me too".
I really like GPM.  It does everything I need it to do (which 99% of the time is simply playing ALL of the music located on my device randomly) and it does it well.  I'm very unimpressed with YTM so far and I'll be continuing to use GPM until the bitter end, it seems.  Once that goes away, I may have to consider something else if all of these issues aren't resolved.

Myself as well. I'll be leaving the service if they don't bring YTM up to feature parity with GPM before GPM is shut down. GOOGLE HAS BAIT/SWITCHED ME FOR THE LAST TIME.

Whatever their business reasoning for doing so, they've deprecated an app which worked WONDERFULLY and replaced it with trash. I spent hours adding my library to GPM, and it loved having it all accessible in such a streamlined app. Now, I have to wade through a bunch of Youtube garbage to get to MY OWN MUSIC LIBRARY.

I'll say it again, Google. Fix YTM, or leave GPM where it is. I and many others will leave the service if you continue with your planned deprecation in October.

At least you can see your device library. I cannot on my PC at all. Only see it on my phone in YTM, which cannot be played on my TV. And as in your case, I have many hours of dowloaded music that was in my GPM. If I loose that because of being forced to come to YTM, hell has no fury for what will happen.

I have the same problem everyone above has. It takes 5-10 minutes to load the list of songs on my device (Samsung Galaxy S9+) than when I click on one of the songs or hit shuffle, it loads for 10 minutes before it gives an error code (-pgyjv0QmnulH7xF)  also, that replay button doesn't work... Another issue I have is that the songs that it shows on my YouTube music list have to be downloaded one by one in order to be played offline? Isn't there a mass download button or something?

I have not been able to get YT Music to load any music stored on my phone (S10+). GPM and every other music app I've tried can see them with zero problem. But YT Music does not load them.

Frankly, YT Music is useless if i can't even access my own music.
I'll be using something else since they can't have even the most basic function working after all this time.
I cannot fathom how stupid they are to throw away GPM for this.

I have the same issue on Galaxy S10+. Device files needs to be discovered every time the app is opened and device files are accessed under Playlists or Songs. This deem the app useless for my use. I need music to start playing as soon I start the car with auto shuffle from my device file library. Please fix it soon.

Google Play Music has lately started giving problem as well. Many times it fails to transfer the song meta data to the car when it moves from one song to another and then suddenly stops playing (this happens with other bluetooth device like headphones etc. as well .

What about when you're offline?  For me, Artists, Albums and Device files just never load when I'm offline.  Why?

Same problem for me - 1)takes forever to load and 2) the files ONLY appear in "device files" instead of in the music library like they did in GPM. So I can't sort by artist, album, etc. It's just one big list of songs. I hate Google and regret ever leaving Apple. Everything on Google is a mess and not intuitive.

I just chatted with Google. Apparently, my issue is happening because the majority of my music is from iTunes. They told me I need to contact Apple to find out how to transfer music from iTunes to YTM. What a cluster

Same problem as most above.  At least 3 to 4 minutes every time I open the app. YouTube Music has been a great disappointment.

Exact same issue here. Takes 2-3 minutes to load and a 50/50 chance of "error has occurred".

Queues aren't working in ytm either.

This is so frustrating! I have also tried to add songs that are stored on my SD card into a playlist, using only the device stored songs but every time I try to add a song to the playlist it says 'error'. I need to make a playlist to use with an app called 'seconds'.

I have a brand new Note 20 Ultra and it still takes a minute or two to load my library every single time I try to access the songs. This is absolutely unacceptable. I hate YT Music because of this. I hate I'm being forced to use an app that 100% subpar to Google Play Music. If this isn't fixed soon, I will be cancelling my YT Premium subscription. Not worth the headaches.

Same here.  Updated the app and still wait 3 minutes to populate.  Then I choose a song,  and never plays.  GPM was so much better.  I can play them easily from "my files", but can't continuous play or shuffle or anything 21st century.  I have a galaxy 10 note plus.

My music collection on my device includes music files from Google Play, DRM free mp3s, and FLACs I have authored myself. Between each song there is ten seconds of silence while Youtube is confused what it should do. Fix this.

Every single time you open the app and go to device files it seems to have to reload or search your phone to populate the list of artists, songs or albums. Why? Why can't the app cache the device files and just check for differences?
marked this as an answer
Relevant Answer
Add me to the list, Galaxy Note 10+, listen almost exclusively to files on my SD card.  Google Play Music works great, YouTube Music makes me dig for the files' location, takes minutes to populate, and then never plays. At this point I assume Google simply does not want people to listen to their own stored music, as they don't profit from that. There is only streaming and frustration. And other, better music apps.

Same here. It just says unable to open files. It gives a different reason code every time. If this is the music player I have to get forced into using, bye bye Android.

It will of course play music I've purchased from Google but none of my other music.

I've been having this issue for months and its getting me even more angry. I have thousands of songs from cds and mixtapes that I've been converting since the 90s'. Google doesn't have a lot of the songs that I grew up with from Latin America. GPM was superior to YTM. 2020 has been a shit show and Google didn't fail to smear their long time users. ANDROID IS ABOUT CHOICES they said when i got the G1...wth happend?

I have the same issue as above. It takes about 20 seconds to load my SD Card library, and even then playback is slow. I skipped to another song and it never started playing. I had to use my phone's resident music player instead.

YouTube music is great for discovering new music, not so great for playing the stuff you've been listening to for years.

Same problem. Pathetic effort on YT Music's part. These files are stored locally, so they should be as easy to retrieve on YTM as they are on GPM. I chatted with a Support agent and they recommended I upload my music to YTM, download it again, then play from there. Absolutely not, and an absurd suggestion. Unless this is improved, I'll be switching back to iPhone the moment my Pixel 3a kicks the bucket and relying on Spotify until then. I own my music. I'm going to control where it's stored and how it's played, period.

Google Play music has been significantly more dependable for me on all my devices. My current device, a Pixel 4A, only takes about 30-45 seconds to load the device files on YTMusic, but that's still kinda harsh when I'm trying to play music in a rush and Google Play Music handled it effectively instantly. Why were we told to move to an inferior platform?
marked this as an answer
Relevant Answer
Youtube music is a far inferior app to GPM its not even close. For one if i wanna listen to music saved to my device like my music collection from 5 years ago mixed in with songs in streaming I cant which on GPM is easy! Then it takes forever for it to load too. I really really really hope and wish they'd wait before shutting down gpm until the yt music app is perfect at least just as good as gpm.

Same issue here. I was using Google Play Music until this afternoon (was working fine) when I was prompted to ugrade to Android 11, which I did (silly me!). Now GPM no longer works and I am getting the following mesage: "couldn't play the track you requested". I decided to switch to YTM, but I can't see my local tracks from the app although I have a bunch of MP3's which are in my Pixel 3A Music folder. I flushed my whole GPM library but I now I can't see my local music files there either...

This is pathetic. I used to be on iOS and decided to move to Android. What a mistake that was!

my on device music which works well in GPM doesn't migrate to yt music. they show up in the songs section but all of my playlist with my on device music from gpm doesn't populate.

is it because of the coding of the files? whether I obtained them by buying them or downloading them?

Same here, device files take forever to load and when they finally do load, you get an error message when attempting to play it. I can not play device files at all.  It seems YT music app does not play device files and everything needs to streamed. We purchase the music and rightfully own it but now there is no way to play the file without an internet connection.  I really do miss CD's but hated the inconvenience of having to physically carry your CD library everywhere you go. Those were the days!!!

I haven't had a problem playing my downloads, but I sure do see that others have. Waiting a bit isn't a problem for me, but I've yet to experience a wait for myself. I don't understand why waiting is a big problem as of yet, but I do understand why waiting would be a problem. So far, so good. Still, I really don't want to know. Even a minute is a long time when you're waiting to play your own stuff. Other peoples stuff have not caused me to wait, but I can see why it would.

Waiting on a product that you pay so much for is a problem. YTM has asked me again and again if I want to join. As I have no problems now, I don't want to know first hand for myself. So far so good is just going to have to be my spacer. Still, why does YTM keep on asking? I'm happy with what I've gotten so far and would never ask for a change that would make me wait. DUH, DUH, please stop asking me to join YTM. I just don't need a problem now or ever having to wait on anything.
