Google Home can't play YouTube Premium ("needs video device") 1 Recommended Answer 14 Replies 63 Upvotes

Hello there,

I subscribed to YouTube Premium the day it got available in Germany, but unfortunately, I have a problem when it comes to asking any of my Assistant enabled devices (e.g. Google Home) to play music via the YT Music. The app is selected in the Music sections of the Google Home app (screenshot 1), but when I ask it to play something, it'll tell me that it needs a video enabled device for that (screenshot 2). When I change the default music service back to Play Music, there is no such problem. Anybody experienced a similar problem and knows how to make it work, or is it just a bug for now? It worked as intended for a while, but since a week, this problem occurs. Thanks in advance for any help provided

Interesting, as I am fairly certain I tried it before and it actually said "playing XXX via YouTube Music". Anyway, are you talking about the region Germany or the German language setting (I am using English as language for all my devices as feature are available faster and I am a fluent speaker)

Mine is located in Germany but set to English. When I ask to play music, it will do so, but on my Chromecast. Not ideal when that is two floors downstairs.

Exactly, I have a Shield TV and it kept playing a YouTube Video on that instead of just music on my Google Home. Incredibly annoying and to be honest, it shouldn't really be too much trouble to Google to bring something that already works on GPM to Youtube Music, and is, in my humble opinion, an essential feature. I understand that YouTube Music is still early access (why they advertise the service as fully released on YouTube is beyond me), but a frustrating user experience like this should be avoided. Sorry for nagging, but I like my Google Home and the features that go with it.

Youtube Music is a joke. A bad one actually. You launch an app but don't offer support for it.
It didn't work in Google Assistant also, not only with Google Mini.
Went back to Spotify, much better that Youtube's shitty app.
