Change your audio quality

YouTube Music Premium members can select the bitrate at which music is streamed and downloaded. If you haven’t selected a quality setting, it will automatically be set to the “Normal” bitrate for your location.

Select your streaming audio quality

Audio quality on Wi-Fi

  1. In the YouTube Music app YouTube music app icon, tap on your profile picture .
  2. Select Settings and then Data saving and then Audio quality on Wi-Fi.
  3. Select one of the available options:
  • Low
    • Uses least data
    • Upper bound of 48kbps AAC & OPUS
  • Normal
    • Default setting
    • Upper bound of 128kbps AAC & OPUS
  • High
    • Uses extra data
    • Upper bound of 256kbps AAC & OPUS
  • Always High
    • Maintains high quality even when connection is poor
    • Bitrate: 256kbps AAC & OPUS

Audio quality on mobile network

  1. In the YouTube Music app YouTube music app icon, tap on your profile picture .
  2. Select Settings and then Data saving and then Audio quality on mobile network.
  3. Select one of the available options:
  • Low
    • Uses least data
    • Upper bound of 48kbps AAC & OPUS
  • Normal
    • Default setting
    • Upper bound of 128kbps AAC & OPUS
  • High
    • Uses extra data
    • Upper bound of 256kbps AAC & OPUS
  • Always High
    • Maintains high quality even when connection is poor
    • Bitrate: 256kbps AAC & OPUS

Stream using Wi-Fi on mobile

If you're using YouTube Music on your mobile device, you can turn on the "Stream via Wi-Fi only" setting.

To turn on "Stream via Wi-Fi only":

  1. Tap on your profile picture .
  2. Select Settings  and then Data saving.
  3. Turn on Stream via Wi-Fi only .

Select your download audio quality

  1. In the YouTube Music app YouTube music app icon, tap on your profile picture .
  2. Select Settings and then Download & storage.
  3. Tap Audio quality.
  4. Select your download quality:
    • Low
      • Uses least storage on your device
      • Bitrate: 48kbps AAC & OPUS
    • Normal
      • Default setting
      • Bitrate: 128kbps AAC & OPUS
    • High
      • Higher-quality audio will use more storage on your device
      • Bitrate: 256kbps AAC & OPUS

If you’ve previously downloaded songs, they'll stay at their current audio quality unless you re-download them. Changing the download audio quality only impacts the quality of future downloads.
