Choose between audio and video mode

With a YouTube Music Premium membership, you can choose between listening to content or watching videos from the creators you love.

Podcasts are now available to YouTube Music users in the US. Start listening in the YouTube Music app.

What is audio mode?

Audio mode lets you listen to music or podcasts without loading a video. Enjoy music or podcasts even if you're experiencing low connectivity or video playback issues. Audio mode for music is only available with a YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium subscription.
Note: Audio-only mode is available to all podcast listeners regardless of membership status, but may not be available for all podcast content.

Switch between audio and video mode

  1. Open a song or podcast you want to enjoy in the YouTube Music app.
  2. You'll see the option to select Audio or Video mode at the top of the screen.
    • Tap Video to turn on video mode.
    • Tap Audio to only hear the album version of the song or the podcast episode.
    • If you want to stop playing videos and go back to a listening only experience, tap Audio.
Note: If the creator hasn’t made a video for their music or podcast, the video option won’t be available.

Turn on audio-only mode:

  1. Open the YouTube Music app from your signed-in account.
  2. Select your profile photo and then Settings.
  3. Switch Don’t play videos to the on position.

You can also listen to full albums regardless of whether some songs in the album have YouTube videos or not. If a song does not have an accompanying music video, the audio version will play instead.

Note: Audio-only mode is available to all podcast listeners regardless of membership status, but may not be available for all podcast content.
