Ask Music is a Generative AI companion in YouTube Music, designed to make your YouTube Music experience more personal. Beyond creating custom radio mixes and playlists for any mood, you can also use it to discover podcasts. You can even reflect on your listening history, such as your top songs, or dive deeper by asking factual questions about music or artists.

Whether you want music that makes you feel warm and fuzzy on a rainy day or an upbeat playlist for your cardio workout, Ask Music allows you to create a personalized experience just for you.

How Ask Music works

From the home screen :

1. Find the What are you in the mood for? section.
2. Tap the Ask any way you like text box.
3. Use voice or text to tell the app what you’d like to listen to.
   • To access previous mixes and playlists, navigate to your library and select from the player page of the song that is part of one of your previous customized experiences.

From the search page:

1. Tap in the upper-right corner.
2. Use voice or text to tell the app what type of music you’d like to listen to such as “dance music” or “slow jams.”
   • If your search query returns a customized mix or playlist as the top result, you may see the label “Mix created by AI.”
3. Tap Play within the top result and music will begin playing right away.

Note: Ask Music uses a large language model (LLM), to interpret your requests. In addition to generating customized mixes and playlists, Ask Music supports informational deep dive queries about music and podcasts, as well as your watch history.

To provide you with this conversational experience and tailored suggestions, Ask Music may pull the following information into the LLM:

• Your current query and recent conversational history within the active Ask Music session.
• Your broader listening and watch history, including your top artists, top songs, and top podcast shows.
• Information about the currently playing media, mix, or playlist.
• Identifiers or metadata about items currently on your screen, such as the playlist detail page if a playlist was just created in the chat.

Customized mixes appearing as top results on the search results page are pre-generated by our systems using an LLM to create the title, description and metadata of the mix. Your personal data is not used for this purpose.

Quality and accuracy may vary. We've incorporated safeguards into our AI tools, which aim to avoid the generation of inappropriate content. As such, we may block prompts or outputs that violate our policies, or those that touch on sensitive topics. We're constantly learning and we want to improve this feature, so submit feedback if you find an issue.

Use AI to turn an idea into a customized music experience by describing what you want to hear. To get started:

1. Open YouTube Music and go to your Home tab .
2. Tap “Ask any way you like.”
3. Enter a prompt that describes a mood, activity, or listening experience.
4. Tap to listen to your custom experience.

You can start a new experience at any time by tapping .

Ask Music for podcasts

You can use Ask Music in YouTube Music to discover podcast shows and episodes using natural language. Describe what you want to hear, and our conversational AI will provide tailored recommendations based on your interests.

   • Enter a prompt or use your voice to describe a topic, genre, or mood. For example, you can ask for "intellectual podcasts about tech" or "podcasts about pop culture."

Interact with recommendations

Once you receive a recommendation, you can refine your discovery or save content for later:

• Explore suggestions: Tap the suggestion chips or follow-up prompts at the bottom of the interface to continue the conversation.
• Save for later: Add a recommended episode to your Saved podcasts playlist or save a show to your Library.

What data is collected? How is it used?

When you search with Ask Music, we will collect data around your use of the tool, including the queries and feedback you submit on responses you receive. This data helps us to provide, improve, and develop our products and services.

To help with quality and improve our products, human reviewers may read, give notes on, and process your conversations with this tool. We take steps to protect your privacy, including disconnecting your conversations from your Google Account before reviewers see them, and using automated tools to remove personal info like email addresses and phone numbers.

Why is Ask Music only available for Premium members?

We are currently launching Ask Music for Premium and Music Premium members only on the YouTube Music app.
