Content level settings in Family Link for YouTube Kids

When your kid uses YouTube Kids with their Google Account, you will be able to change their content level setting in the Family Link app on your device. Note that content level settings are currently only available in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Jamaica, Philippines, and South Africa.

Select content level in the Family Link App

  1. Open the Family Link app.
  2. Select your kid.
  3. On the "Settings" card, tap Manage settings and then More and then YouTube Kids.
    • You won't see "YouTube Kids" if your kid doesn't have the app on their device.
  4. Tap Content level.
  5. Select Younger setting or Older setting.

Younger Setting

The Younger content setting was designed with kids 8 and under in mind, and includes songs, cartoons, crafts, and other content that generally appeals to kids in preschool and early elementary school. Our systems try to exclude content not suitable for young kids, but since we can’t manually review all content, and no automated system is perfect, we may miss some videos. If you find a video that isn’t appropriate for kids, please report it for fast review. Search in this setting is limited to the YouTube Kids videos included in the Younger setting.

Older Setting

The Older content setting was designed with kids 8-12 in mind, and includes additional music videos, gaming, science, and more. This setting is for older kids who may be ready for more grown-up content filtered from the broader universe of videos on YouTube. For example, the app will show music and gaming videos and vlogs that are not eligible to be shown in YouTube Kids with the Younger setting and may include more explicit language and imagery, some violence, or suggestive content. This setting tries to exclude mature content, but since we can’t manually review all content and no automated system is perfect, we may miss some videos. This means that in this setting, there is a chance that your child may run into more mature videos that could include nudity, offensive language, and violence. If you find a video that isn’t appropriate for kids using this Older content setting, please report it for fast review. Search in this setting allows your child to explore all YouTube Kids videos, including younger and older content.

Note: You can see a preview of what kind of content would be available in Younger content setting and Older content setting when clicking on the radio button. You can change these settings at any time. If your kid is using YouTube Kids with their Google Account, you can unblock videos from the YouTube Kids settings in the Family Link app on your device.
