Join or remove YouTube Red

Have a question about YouTube Red? Please contact us here.

If you’re a Google Play Music subscriber, you already have access to YouTube Red; just make sure that you’re signed into the same account on YouTube and Google Play. Note that both services must be available in your location for this to work.

Rented and purchased movies or TV shows and paid channel subscriptions are not compatible with YouTube Red benefits.

Start your YouTube Red membership

Become a YouTube Red member to start accessing the benefits across YouTube, YouTube Music, YouTube Gaming, and YouTube Kids.

  1. Open the YouTube app on your phone or tablet. Sign into the Google account you'd like to start your membership on
  2. Go to Account
  3. Scroll down and tap Get YouTube Red
  4. Tap Start free trial to sign up
  5. On iOS, confirm the Apple ID you’d like to use to pay, and enter your Apple ID password

On iOS, you can cancel your membership at any time from your iTunes account. Visit the YouTube Red section of the Parental Settings to check the status of your membership and view your next billing date.

To activate YouTube Red member benefits in the YouTube Kids app, you’ll need to have a YouTube Red membership on your own Google account. Follow these steps to associate the kids app on your device with your membership:

  1. Tap the lock icon in the bottom corner of any page in the app
  2. Read and enter the numbers that appear or enter your custom passcode
  3. Select Settings
  4. Tap Activate YouTube Red
  5. If the account with your YouTube Red membership is already signed into a Google app on this device, select it from the account picker. Otherwise tap Add YouTube Red account and sign in.*
    • *Note: signing into your Google account will make it available to any other Google apps on the same device.
  6. Tap Send parental consent email
  7. Check your email for a message from YouTube Kids. This will include a verification code
  8. Return to the YouTube Kids app. Enter your verification code into the YouTube Kids app

YouTube Red member benefits will now be ready to use in the YouTube Kids app on this device! When you first complete the steps above, you’ll be prompted to enable offline videos and select the amount of video content you want to store. Select Done to finish the setup and return to the Home screen.

Activating YouTube Red with your own Google account does not sign the account into the YouTube Kids app. Watch and search history, if enabled, will still be limited to the Kids app on that device, and will not be linked to your Google account.

You can check the status of your YouTube Red membership at any time from the YouTube Red section of the parental settings.

Remove Remove YouTube Red benefits or switch account

If you’d like to remove YouTube Red benefits from the YouTube Kids app, or switch the account used to grant YouTube Red member benefits, follow these steps:

  1. Tap the lock icon  in the bottom corner of any page in the app
  2. Read and enter the numbers that appear or enter your custom passcode
  3. Select Settings
  4. Tap YouTube Red account
  5. Tap Remove from app

This will remove the link between this account’s YouTube Red membership and the YouTube Kids app on this device. Note that this account may still be signed into other Google apps on this device.

If you’d like, you can activate YouTube Red member benefits again using any account with a YouTube Red membership.
