Accessibility on YouTube Kids

The YouTube Kids app works with Android's accessibility feature, TalkBack, which gives accessibility support for blind and low-vision users. Go to the Android Accessibility Help Centre to learn more, including how to turn on these settings.

Getting started

After you've turned on your Android accessibility settings, TalkBack and Explore by Touch can help you to explore content and elements in the YouTube app. Review the Explore by Touch instructions for more info about these features.

Navigate the app

Once you've opened the app, you can use two fingers to scroll from right to left to view family-friendly videos, channels and playlists. Double-tap on any thumbnail to view the video or to explore the channel or playlist. Double-tap the 'back' button to go back.

Search for videos

Double-tap on the search button and add your search terms to the 'edit' box. To do a voice search, double-tap on the 'voice search' button and speak your search terms.

Play videos

Once you've found a video to play, double-tap to begin playback; the video will automatically go into full-screen mode. Double-tap again to minimise a video during playback.

  • Skip ad: Double-tap 'you can skip ad' button to skip the ad before your video.
  • Pause: Double-tap the 'pause video' button to pause the video.
  • Next video: Double-tap the 'next video' button to play the next related video.

Below the video, you'll find related videos that you can play once your video has finished.

Auto-play videos

The auto-play setting is turned off by default. When auto-play is turned on, we'll automatically play another related video.

To turn on auto-play:

  1. Go to the watch page of any video in YouTube Kids.
  2. Double-tap the 'more options' button. 
  3. Double-tap the 'auto-play off' button to turn auto-play on. Double-tap the 'auto-play on' button if you want to turn auto-play off.
Set a timer

Set a timer:

  1. Double-tap the 'parental control' button. You will find it in the bottom right-hand corner of any page.
  2. Tap the 'grown-ups only' menu and enter the numbers.
  3. Double-tap the 'timer' button.
  4. Double-tap the 'subtract one minute' button or 'add one minute' button to set a time limit.
  5. Double-tap the 'start timer' button.
Send feedback

Send feedback about the app:

  1. Double-tap the 'parental control' button.
  2. Tap the 'grown-ups only' menu and enter the numbers.
  3. Double-tap the 'feedback' button.
  4. Enter your feedback in the 'edit' box.
  5. Double-tap the 'preview' button.
  6. Double-tap the 'send' button.
Report inappropriate videos

Report an inappropriate video:

  1. Go to the video that you'd like to report.
  2. Double-tap 'more options' button.
  3. Double-tap 'flag video' button.
  4. Double-tap 'yes' button.
Clear watch and search history

Clear watch and search history and reset the videos in the Recommendations section of the app:

  1. Double-tap the 'parental control' button.
  2. Tap the 'grown-ups only' menu and enter the numbers.
  3. Double-tap 'settings' button.
  4. Double-tap 'clear history'.
  5. Double-tap the 'OK' button.
Audio settings

Turn off the audio that plays within the app:

  1. Double-tap the 'parental control' button.
  2. Tap the 'grown-ups only' menu and enter the numbers.
  3. Double-tap 'settings' button.
  4. To turn the sounds on or off, tap the 'background music' and 'sound effects' tick boxes.
Search settings

To turn off search and limit viewable videos to videos selected by the app on the home screen, including 'Recommended' and 'Watch it again':

  1. Double-tap the 'parental control' button.
  2. Tap the 'grown-ups only' menu and enter the numbers.
  3. Double-tap 'settings' button.
  4. Double-tap the 'search' tick box.
Pause watch and search history
When you turn on Pause history, the app will stop using:
  • Videos that you watch, or
  • Terms that you search for
as signals for Recommended and Watch it again videos. You can turn on Pause history in the app's parental settings by switching the button to ON.
