Timestamps and editing tools to help you resolve manual Content ID claims 0 Recommended Answers 93 Replies 2398 Upvotes

We’ve heard from creators that the increased number of manual claims, especially for short segments of video, has led to frustration and often times, confusion when the claim lacks key information such as timestamps.

Starting today, we’re requiring copyright owners to provide timestamps for all new manual Content ID claims so creators know exactly which part of their video is being claimed. We’re also improving our video editing tools, so that manual claims can be automatically released when the claimed content is removed by creators.

TIMESTAMPS to show you exactly what part of your video is being manually claimed
  • You’ll now see exactly where the manually claimed content appears in your video. This will help you understand why you got a claim, and what part of your video to edit if you choose to remove the claimed content.

  • We’ll be evaluating the accuracy of these timestamps. Copyright owners who repeatedly fail to provide accurate data will have their access to manual claiming revoked.

EDITING TOOLS to remove manually claimed content in your video and automatically release the claim
  • Mute Song: If you get a claim for a piece of music in your video, you can mute the time-stamped segment. This means no sound will play at all in your video during that segment. Learn more about muting a claimed song from your video.

  • Replace Song: If you don’t want to mute the audio entirely, you can instead swap out the music with one of our free-to-use songs from the YouTube Audio Library. Learn more about swapping the audio track on your video.

  • Coming soon – improved Trim feature: We’re still working on several editing tool improvements, like having an explicit Trim option built into YouTube Studio’s Copyright Info page, which will allow you to trim out claimed content with just one click. For now, you’ll still see an option to trim out time-stamped segments using YouTube Editor’s Trim feature.

REMINDER for other things you can do if you receive a claim
  • Do nothing: If you agree with the claim, you can just move on. You can always change your mind later if you disagree with the claim.

  • Share revenue: If you’re a member of the YouTube Partner Program, and you've included a musical composition in your video, you may be able to share revenue with the music publisher.

  • Dispute the claim: Remember, if you receive a claim that you believe is incorrect, you have the right to dispute it. If both you and the person claiming your video are attempting to monetize it, we will continue to show ads on the video during the dispute process and make sure the appropriate party gets the revenue once the dispute is resolved. Learn more about Monetization during Content ID disputes.

STAY TUNED for more
  • This is just the first step, we’re continuing to work on new ways to improve the creator copyright experience, while also balancing the rights of copyright owners. We’ll share updates throughout this year. We also want to make sure everyone has answers to common copyright questions, so we’ll keep this thread updated with top FAQs and best practices for creators: Answers to your questions about Copyright claims on YouTube

This is a big step in the right direction! The next one would be fixing the dispute system, the people making the claim shouldn't have the final say of wether or not a claim is legitimate.
