Changes to emails you receive for new video uploads from your subscriptions
0
Hi Everyone,

Heads up: If you’re opted in to get emails about new uploads, live streams, and premieres from channels you’re subscribed to, these emails are going away on August 13th, 2020. You’ll still get notified on mobile via the YouTube app, or on desktop via your Chrome browser if you’ve turned these notifications on. If you haven’t turned these on yet, you can do so in notification Settings.

Why? Less than 0.1% of these emails are opened, and people have told us that these emails contribute to inbox overload – we hope this change helps you more easily spot and pay attention to the important emails YouTube sends about your account, mandatory service announcements, etc. as no other types of emails are going away.

Creators: We didn't see any impact to watch time when we experimented with turning off these emails. In fact, our tests showed that when we don't send these emails, more people engage with mobile push notifications and their Subscriptions feed.

Remind me: How do I manage my YouTube notifications? To learn more about the different notification types, how to update your settings, and more, visit this Help Center article.

Hope this heads up is helpful,
Sarah, TeamYouTube

How do I downvote this monumentally stupid idea?  I rely on the emails to decide what to watch.  Notifications are only of use if I'm doing nothing else at the time.

This is disappointing. I rarely watch videos as soon as I get notified, and notifications on the site and in the app are easy to forget about once they have been acknowledged. With e-mails I can go back days or weeks and watch when I'm ready.

As anyone with inbox overload can already turn off e-mails if they want, it's not clear why such a change is necessary.

Also, one doesn't need to open an e-mail to see it and be aware of it.

I can't even remember how many years I have been using e-mail notifications to know that a youtube creator has put out a new video to watch. You seem to do everything in your power to make using youtube as difficult as possible.

As stated by others. It takes "Opting in" to a creators channel to get the "extra" emails that we get, so I don't understand how this is a problem for us patrons. We have opted in to it. We expect those emails to come in.

Now, what? I have to hang by my phone 24/7 waiting or notifications to come in so that I can go to that creators channel and add their latest video to my "Watch Later" list?

Are you taking an idea from Trump's playbook and saying you "tested" this when in reality, you only checked maybe 10 accounts to see if there was an impact?

I guess my pleading with you to please not do this is going to go completely unheard. I wonder what creators are going to do now to let people know they have created a video. Smoke signals?

Why do this?
People who don't read them and complain about it overloading their inbox can just deactivate email notifications. This is just screwing up people who actually DO find them useful.

I'd love to engage with Subscriptions feed. I am subscribed to over 70 channels, but when I opened my subscription box this morning to see new videos, all it said was

"Your subscriptions haven’t uploaded any videos yet.
Try finding another channel to subscribe to."

I can't find any solutions to this anywhere online and I would rather not check each channel everyday for new uploads. It has happened to me in June and all videos older than 1-2 days disappeared and now it happened again, but after refreshing the page all videos were gone!

It has been reported as early as in March, but all the threads get locked without a solution. (Some say it happens only in specific view, on specific platforms or browsers, but for me it's global. Videos from subbed channels are gone even on Android in YT app.)

Very bad unilateral decision. A tenth percent is still a whole lot of users that rely on email notifications to watch their subscribed channels. Why don't just turn the notifications off, and let those who want it to turn it on again? Now we have only Chrome (which I don't use anymore 'cause it's a resources black hole) and mobile notifications, which creates way more clutter than email messages :/

Plus, mine were already gone since Aug 6th, not 13th as announced.

Daniel Zamora.....same thing happened to me!  Was with the very incompetent and uninformed Google Support Chat for 3 hours this morning trying to find out what had happened to my YT notifications and noone at Google Support knew Diddly Squat about this either and to top if off did a 30 day restore of emails to have me locate them when THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS THEY WERE NO LONG AVAILABLE AND THAT SERVICE HAD BEEN DISCONTINUED WITHOUT WARNING AND NOTICE GIVEN.  Had to spend time redeleting a lot of  emails I had already deleted I wanted deleted.  The email restore ordeal Google put me through was the wrong IR-issue resolution to my problem;  IF THESE PEOPLE SITTING IN ONLINE CHAT SUPPORT HAD GOTTEN THIS MEMO THEN I WOULD HAVE BEEN SPARED WHAT I HAVE ENDURED FOR MOST OF TODAY. GOOGLE, YOU TUBE, AND GMAIL ARE ALL UNDER THE SAME CORPORATE UMBRELLA AND EVERYONE WORKING IN CUSTOMER SUPPORT SHOULD HAVE HAD THIS MEMO IN THEIR ALERTS FILE TO REFER TO WHEN THEY ARE WORKING WITH END USERS TO RESOLVE THEIR ISSUES!  SMH SMH SMH SMH SMH SMH SMH SMH TO WHAT THIS WORLD IS EVOLVING INTO!

Please reconsider this idea, it is terrible. The only useful way I have found to track new uploads is the notification e-mail. I like them because they come to me. Other methods require me to have time to waste scrolling through my subscriptions looking for things that may have changed.

I also don't watch all videos in the order they're are posted, so having a list of "new uploads" isn't helpful because it will have videos I've watched mixed in with ones I haven't.

On top of that, YouTube does a generally terrible job of indicating/tracking which videos I have watched, so I can't even rely on some type of visual indicator before clicking.

And if this idea goes ahead, I apologize to all my subscribed channels in advance, as I'm sure I won't be following you as closely anymore.

IF (and that is a BIG IF) only 0.1% of the emails are ever opened... why not simply set EVERY single account email settings to "OFF" and leave the settings there so that people who absolutely NEED them can toggle them back on??

Why remove a feature that "some" people rely upon and need to actually be able to properly use the site?? I do not have internet on a cellphone because its a phone... nor do I want to have to go through my subscription feed every day, bookmark the video i want to keep track of... I had 20 settings on my gmail account to properly filter my youtube subscriptions... most of the time I would watch them all during the weekends... but now, with 141 channel subscribed, there is NO HUMAN WAY for me to keep track of all that is being posted... and i'll end up missing out on most of it...

Why is REMOVING choices ever a good idea? Just toggle the setting OFF for everyone and let people decide if they really want it to toggle it back on!!

Please let us opt into still receiving the emails. I have push notifications off, due to I don't want them during my working hours. I use the emails to then go back and watch what I want. Now if there was an option to have new videos added to my watch later automatically. That would be awesome! I find that Youtube's suggestions bury the content of some of the smaller creators who don't post as often yet I still want to watch and support through their journey. How do i not miss videos when using desktop and my go to notification is email.

You could do even better: track people who don't open the videos using their emails, if no email has been open since 2 weeks/1 month, alert them that the option "Send emails" will be disabled automagically. Everyone will be happy in that way, and it's ust a bit of work for you to implement this.

Awful decision! What if I don't have time/don't want to watch the video right after it was uploaded? If only I had a place where notifications will wait until I have time, like, maybe inbox... Oh, wait!
So now I need to watch video right away or don't watch it? If I go on vacation for couple of weeks I'll miss all the videos from my favorite channels? What the problem if I don't open email for even a year? It's MY inbox. I, as you mentioned, OPTED IN to receive emails. Maybe, I wait until full series is out and then watch everything in a row from my inbox notifications?
Another awful decision from Google.

This is a terrible idea to unilaterally eliminate email notification options. This is already a setting that people can turn on or off, so if it's a problem for them then THEY should turn it OFF for themselves. I use my email notifications to review my subscription uploads up to weeks after the video was posted. The mobile notifications just clutter my phone and I eliminate those immediately. There's no way I can keep track of that many notifications, and plus my phone clears them out after they've been up for a day anyway. My notification emails just stopped working days ago (way before Aug 13th as this article states) and I've spent a long time trying to figure out why they're not coming anymore and finally I found this obscure post. So maddening.

I was not notified of this in any way. I only found out because I happened to glance at my dashboard. I'm certain a lot of people are going to miss this update entirely and be left wondering where the heck their notifications went. If you're going to turn off email notifications, please notify us properly first.
I should have expected no better from YouTube, but I am still very disappointed at this decision. I don't use mobile devices or Chrome browser for YouTube and have no intent to start using them now. This will severely impact my usage of YouTube. Instead of totally removing the email notifications, YouTube should turn them off by default. Then anyone who wants email notifications can turn them back on and continue as usual!
I really hope that once YouTube sees the anger their decision has caused, they will reverse it. Otherwise, maybe it's time for those of us who are impacted by this to find a different platform.

honestly I almost completely depend on these email notifications to even bother going into youtube to watch videos. I understand the decision, but, I would've lied it if the email notifications were kept as it was before. without the email notifications, it is very likely that I will forget to go to youtube for days, if not weeks. I also don't quite understand the notifications from the chrome browser, nor can I actually get it to work on my computer. even with the chrome browsers, I'm subscribed to over a thousand channels, and receiving hundreds of notifications daily is far more distracting and ineffective than having a (permanent) email notification in my socials tab. I also experience clutter with these notifications, so I understand the reason behind removing these email notifications, but it is necessary to me. I would like to have these email notifications, and I worry for what new changes are planned for notifications in the future. I just started having this problem on August 13, but, until I just very recently found out, I didn't even know this was a thing. I'm pretty sure that I stopped receiving notifications halfway into the day, somewhere around 1:13 PM was my last youtube notification, and I knew nothing about this email notification shutdown until now, hours later. going back into youtube constantly and checking the notifications for new videos is inefficient, time-consuming, and effort-wasting for me. Either I will have to check constantly, or, most likely, I will just forget to check youtube for days, weeks, or even months before I remember. I don't want that to happen, but remembering to check youtube daily isn't going to work for me. Constant checks are a hassle, and I dislike this idea, as much as I can understand it.

What about promoting THAT option for users, who have an issue with the notifications? It's not like you can't turn them off if you don't want them?
THIS STEP is NOT userfriendly, and worsens the "experience" on your plattform!
(and it also raises the question about "does YouTube know its own system?" - think "Bell-Icon": let those who don't want notifications know "you can turn them off"!)
STOP THINKING FOR OTHERS - LET THEM MAKE THEIR OWN DECISSIONS!

This is an utterly dreadful move. I don't have time to keep checking the YouTube website throughout the day to see if there are new videos in my subscriptions. I have no doubt the reason for this is to force people to spend longer browsing the site for random videos, rather than just viewing the ones from creators we choose to follow. This is going to screw up everything.  How many people are going to unsubscribe from channels that aren't their very favorites thus damaging those channels?  I do plan on unsubscribing from a lot of channels so I have less shit to wade through in looking for new content.

Why is there an up vote button and no down vote button? Is that so you won't know how lousy this idea is because you know most disgruntled people won't bother to write something but they would click for a down vote.

Edited to add:  I just unsubscribed from 46 channels and I am still subscribed to 83 so I had been subscribed to over 120 channels and email notifications were vital for me to keep up with it all.

I have not used Chrome's bloatware in years, and am not about to start now.

Fuck me, seriously?! Cant we just have a choice?  I dont want push notification or browser notifications.  I need an email as a place holder.  Those that dont want it can turn it off, surely?  Fucking hell google, why have you just robbed us of the choice?

Why have you withdrawn a useful service in favour of an annoyance? If anything its the pop ups I want to turn off.

I can't watch everything as it turns up and I don't want to spend hours searching for it. E-mails were perfect for me and if anything it should be an option, not an arbitrary decision that lowers the customer experience and negatively impacts your content creators.

Please undo this immediately.

Badly done, Youtube, Badly done!

I'm so mad. I use email notifications to keep track of video I need to watch or more want to keep in my database without the need to use playlist. This is a really bad decision. Just bring back the options as a checkbox please !!!!!

Why did you do this?  I rely on those email notifications to efficiently go thru my videos.  Email keeps it all organized for me so I know when a video comes in and let me easily watch it days or weeks later if I don't have time.  Now it's so much harder.  NOT EVERYONE WATCHES ON A PHONE!!

Please turn this back on.  The 99% that apparently don't use email notification, they can turn it off.  Or you default to it off and let us that utilize these notifications to turn it on.

This is terrible, the minute I write my own chrome extension to optimize my YouTube experience, they go and ruin the whole thing for me.

Thank you for this. I hate it entirely. I rarely watch videos once they are uploaded and relied on those emails to male sure I didnt miss anything.

Seriously?

You expect people to go through all their subscriptions manually to find new videos? Why not do what twitch does and disable notifications if they are not activly being activated?

You claim this won't affect channels viewer numbers. Are you sure about that?

Bad idea. I use only gmail on my laptop and since this morning no new notifications at all.
I'm really disappointed.

Dumbest decision ever. At least make a separate browser notification page that people can actually read.

This decision was made to punish the people who are efficient with their yt viewing, information gathering, and not just the dummies haphazardly clicking on whatever going down the yt rabbit hole (which is where they want you).

They know they have other options than screwing over a huge user base.

It's probably political too.

FU YT. However, considering I was watching 8-16 hours a day of videos on 2x speed (multi-tasking), they are probably doing me a favor.

Sadly, I'm one of those that rely on the emails, as I don't use Chrome all the time, nor do I want my phone exploding with notifications of new videos because I work and need to pay attention to other notifications on my phone.  So, creators may have less views from me!

This is terrible. I use e-mail notifications on windows to view my subscription updates.
I have been going through all the YouTube help and settings to try and fix this and then only find out about this by doing a web search.
Why didn't YouTube at least email users that this was happening!
Users could always turn off e-mail notifications in their settings.
Ridiculous!
Now I have to search through my 90 subscriptions each day to see if there are any new uploads.

There really should be an option for that. Sure, you can turn it off by default, but at least give us the option to re-enable them.
I only use emails to get news from my subs, so now I don't know if anyone is uploading anything.
Another option would be to give us a personal RSS feed, where all my subs are included that I also have marked with the bell.

Bad, bad idea. Those of us who opted in to receive email notifications---because we WANT email notifications---are being punished because other people can't be bothered to click "unsubscribe" on emails they don't want. I work full time and can't have my phone pinging me with notifications all day long, and I can't sit around on Chrome all day just in case there's a notification. So when I get home in the evening, how am I supposed to easily see which of my hundreds of channel subscriptions have uploaded that day? Please bring back email notifications!

So you insure the bell doesn't work properly, and then remove the only way I had of easily knowing is a youtuber uploaded a video WHEN they uploaded it. Nice. I relied on this feature to see when new videos were posted because of the broken youtube notification system. Now it's gone. Well done. Would really like this back, this is a huge problem for a lot of people. Why take away something you practically forced some people to use because of broken notifications?

The subscription notification in the app or the website doesn't work reliably at all. Some uploads just won't show up in there or they'll just get hidden after 1-2 days because the videos are too old to be shown anymore.

I've used the e-mails to have a backlog of videos I could watch when I had the time to do so! Not everyone has time for YouTube every day someone uploads something.

Now this useful feature is just gone without any reliable alternative. REALLY GOOD JOB.
Remind me why I am paying for a Premium subscription when features like this just get canned.

That's stupid, i depend on the notifications by mail to keep up to date with my favorite youtubers since the bell is not that effective and the suscription tab is full of channels that i like but i don't see all the videos, so the mail notifications were for those channels that i really like to watch all videos. I don't really believe i'm part of just the 0.1% as this says and i never had problems with spam, indeed all my youtube mails were send to the social tab and that was absolutely correct.

This change was so unnecessary, if someone doesn't want email notifications, they can turn them off for themselves, but for many of us - including me - they were very useful in keeping track of videos that i had yet to watch. Please bring them back.

Well, I'm an unhappy camper.  I *only* use email and a desktop computer for notifications.  I have a smartphone that is sooooooooooooo old and has limited data, so I can't watch videos there when I get a text notification.  Also, I don't even see in the settings how to *get* text notifications!  This is a massive fuster-cluck for sure...
