Over the past week, we've seen a lot of questions about fundraising on YouTube as creators come together to support Black Lives Matter and nonprofits that support racial justice. With so many of you looking for ways to raise awareness and money on YouTube, we’ve put together a quick guide to help you use YouTube as a tool for fundraising, as well as make sure you’re not inadvertently breaking YouTube policies.

BEFORE YOU FUNDRAISE
Please read through this guide and the information below to ensure your efforts to support the causes and organizations that you care about are in line with our policies and beneficial to everyone involved.

DONATING YOUR ADSENSE REVENUE
Some creators have offered to donate the AdSense revenue earned from their videos as a way to raise funds for people who don’t have money to make a donation. While you can take any ad revenue you earn from organic traffic and donate it, some of these videos encourage people to repeatedly watch the video for ad views and/or repeatedly click on the ads in the video, which artificially drives up the video’s watch time and ad metrics – this is against YouTube’s Policies. We’re seeing this encouragement in video titles, descriptions, and in the video content itself, none of which is allowed. If your video encourages this behavior, it will be removed from YouTube, you won’t be paid for the views and clicks, and advertisers will not be charged. For policy specifics, see YouTube’s Community Guidelines: Fake Engagement and AdSense Policies: Encouraging clicks or views.

YOUTUBE TOOLS FOR FUNDRAISING

  • If you’re eligible, add the Donate button to your video: Eligible channels in certain locations can fundraise for available nonprofits by adding the Donate button to their videos and live streams. Learn how to set up a fundraiser here.

  • Use Ends screens to link to the nonprofit/fundraiser website: If you’re not eligible for YouTube Giving and the Donate button, you can use End Screens to link to an external fundraiser. End screens can be added to the last 5–20 seconds of a video. There are several approved third party fundraising sites (like GoFundMe, JustGiving) that can be linked to in end screens.

  • Donate revenue from your videos: Make original content that your audience loves to watch. You can tell your viewers that you will donate the money you earn to a specific nonprofit, but should not encourage them to click or watch ads to increase the contribution. Read through the details above.

We realize some of you kicked off these efforts without a clear understanding of the policies, so YouTube will be donating to racial justice initiatives to acknowledge the efforts over the past week.
