I started having problems with video resolution of vertical videos in February 2020. Whenever I upload a vertical video (.mp4 AVC codec, 1080 x 1920 AAC, 48000 Hz, Stereo (L R), 29.97 FPS, 16.14 Mbps) the maximum resolution is 480p - even allowing a few days time to process. I have tried uploading multiple videos over various computers to try to troubleshoot the issue, but still encounter the same problem.

I have uploaded multiple vertical videos using the same specs in the past and they have all posted in 1080p HD quality and continue to be able to playback at that resolution. Perhaps there have been changes in the upload process that have created this issue? Is there now a box that I have to check for vertical/portrait video that I'm missing?

Around a few weeks ago, I had the same problem, after multiple testings I found out that Youtube has changed the resolution of their HD vertical video since 1st Feb,2020.
HD vertical video used to be 1080x1920  now become  1216x2160.

If you right click the video and show information, you will find vertical video upload after 1st Feb,2020 are using new resolution. No idea why they changed it and I can't find any information about the change.

Now, if you upload 1080x1920 vertical video to Youtube, you only get 480p in resolution of 608x1080, no 720p and no 1080p. If you want Youtube to show HD vertical video in resolution of 1216x2160, you need to upload 1440p vertical video 1440x2560.

If you upload 4K vertical video to youtube, you will get all 720p (810x1440), 1080p (1216x2160) and 4k (2160x3840).

I don't know the change is temporary or permanent or may be just a bug.
Please let me know if Youtube make change again for vertical video.
Thank you

PS: Because of the change from Youtube, I am starting to use IGTV and Flickr to share my vertical video. They both support 1080x1920 vertical video.

I still have this problem even after following the advice posted here. I've posted 1440x2560, I've posted 1080x1920, I've done it from desktop, I've done it from mobile, and I always end up with 480p video... Any suggestions ? Thanks.
