We’re excited to share a unique opportunity with you. The team working on YouTube recommendations would like to hear questions and feedback about your experience and in return, they’ll share their knowledge with you.

Who is the YouTube recommendations team?
The YouTube recommendations team is responsible for the recommendations you see on your Home feed, in the Up Next list of suggested videos, and for YouTube Mixes, which provides endless playlists personalized for you. Several Product Managers from the team will be here to answer your questions.

Here are some potential questions you could ask the team:
  • I’ve recently created a channel and have been uploading videos for months. I’ve had good growth in views in the beginning but now it looks like YouTube is recommending my content less. What is changing with the algorithm?
  • I keep on pressing not interested, but similar videos continue to show up on my Home feed.  Is there anything else I can be doing to fine tune my recommendations?
  • Why do my Up Next suggested videos have so many videos that are not related to the video I’m watching?

Starting today: you can submit your questions and feedback related to recommendations using the comments below and on Friday February 8th at 9:30am PST, our YouTube recommendations team will be here answering as many questions as possible – right here on this thread.

Please mind! The team will only be addressing questions related to recommendations on YouTube in relation to the Home page, Up Next suggestions in autoplay, and YouTube Mixes. Questions around search, subscriptions, trending, notifications, among other non-recommendations related questions will not be addressed because this team only works on recommendations and are not in a position to answer questions in other areas. As such, we will be removing any non-recommendations, off-topic questions.

We look forward to hearing from you!

A lot of the videos you recommend are really not very professional.  The people in them ramble and are self-indulgent and don't really know what is important and what isn't.  They love themselves very much. They also do a lot of what engineers do which is  they say you but the thing in the thing that is near the other thing, which does not help the rest of us.

It would be great with an "in player" like button, for videos embedded on other sites such as Reddit or Facebook, so I don't have to go to another page to like a video.

I have been trying to work with the "Not interested" feauture for a long time now... but I experience that despite me using this on videos that are clearly pushing misogynistic, racist, anti-LGBTQ, anti-immigration topics or just generally hateful, misleading and plain false information, they just keep showing up even more frequently

At this point I feel that even if I could do something to have these videos not show up on my personal account at all anymore, just simply knowing how many other young impressionable people this kind of content is being pushed to is enough to leave me feeling sick on a daily basis.

Is this going to change anytime soon or will I have to start using other sites in order to not be reminded of this constantly? I miss the days when YouTube was a positive place for creators to entertain and connect with people in a postitive way... Now there is so much negative clickbait and propaganda everywhere. I find this very depressing and it's no doubt contributing to the ever increasing divide, ignorance and hate amongst different groups on the platform. Please... I am for free speech but can these kind of videos not be promoted as much... I am really losing my patience with this.

I hope the team will answer all the potential questions Felicitas raised, but just in case, let me re-ask the first one just for everyone:

  1. I’ve (not so) recently created a channel and have been uploading videos for years. I’ve had good growth in views after several months but now it looks like YouTube is recommending my content less. What is changing with the algorithm?
  2. YouTube says that "the algorithm follows the audience", but I have several videos that experienced a boost in recommendations for several months. This suggests that when the proper audience is shown my videos, they enjoy it, but many times, my videos don't seem to generate a lot of suggested or browse features impressions. How can I encourage the algorithm to show my videos to the appropriate audience?
  3. Related to my previous question: my channel has a broad niche (video game music covers), but subtopics that I don't expect every viewer to be interested in (e.g., some viewers may like music from one game series, while others like music from a second game series.) I think let's players have a similar issue. Does having a wide variety of sub topics hurt my chances of being recommended? How can I improve the chances that videos about Game X are recommended to fans of Game X, and videos about Game Y are recommended to fans of Game Y?

As I understand this blog post, there is a machine learning thing being developed to reduce/stop the radicalization of content. Will it be transparent to creators whether their videos got classified as radical, or is it up to the creators to guess based on Analytics what has happened?

Howdy! I have five recommendations and three questions to you:

Recommendations:
- Any chance you could bring YouTube editor back? The one where you can trim and merge multiple videos that YouTube used to have?
- Any chance you can bring annotations feature back? You could improve them so that they're supported by mobile devices as well. Cards are more worthy when advertising, while annotations were better with taking you to other video, other link outside YouTube, or to give watcher option to jump into other position of the video.
- Any chance you could allow invisible links or animated thubnails on end screen's links?
- Any chance you could allow links outside YouTube on cards and endscreens again?
- I know you stricted YPP's regulations to fight against those "Kids Videos" bootlegs, but could you please let people to at least join YouTube Partner Program even if they have unoriginal and repetitive content? They can still choose which videos they want to monetize and which not, and you can still prevent them from monetizing with individual videos with unoriginal content in it, don't you? How much harm could it do?

Questions:
- Which of my videos exactly prevent me from joining YouTube Partner Program? Or is there something else that prevents?
- When video description claims that the song used in it is licensed, does this mean I can use it even in monetized content?
- What are the odds Article 13 will be abandonned?

Hi, does Youtube consider the factor that whether a video is monetized or not when recommending it to others? Because I have noticed that the views for videos that are monetized are usually higher and they are recommended more than the ones that are not monetized. Hi. Can we have some manual filters with the recommended videos please ? I would like the option to select which type of video i want to watch (ie Fishing), where the video was made/published (ie UK) and how old the video is (ie 0 to 6months old/ Less than a year old/ More than a year old etc). A slot reserved in the recommended videos for new creators would be an encouraging feature too. Thanks:-)

1. I can't find my own videos in my recommendation. I only set 4 or 5 tags that I feel are most necessary. Do you think I should more?

2. I don't set certain words as tags if those words already appear in title or in description. Should I set them as tags, even though those words appear in titles and in description?

3. Everyday I post similar type of videos but some days I have a drastic increase in watch count. Is this because YouTube's discovery algorithm is being changed everyday?

4. I'm part of YPP. I don't just want more watch count but I want viewers who stick around until the end of the video. In order to grow this kind of viewers, do you think it's better to have less meta data like tags and video description?

Hello!
The number of views on the channel has plummeted 10 times, and in all videos and in all countries, it would be clear if in one video and in one country, YouTube stopped recommending all videos, the audience retention was 60% and increased every day , prior to losing recommended. What could be the cause?
From this article Official Blog YouTube "Continuing our work to improve recommendations on YouTube" it becomes clear that YouTube has introduced new algorithms. Quote from the article: "To that end, we’ll begin reducing recommendations of borderline content and content that could misinform users in harmful ways—such as videos promoting a phony miracle cure for a serious illness, claiming the earth is flat, or making blatantly false claims about historic events like 9/11". We have children's content and our videos have nothing like the above. Please tell me these are temporary failures?

Our business has a youtube channel. On our videos we would like to use the Endscreen - Link element back to our website and the Cards - Link. However, we're instructed that we must join the Youtube Partner Program.

Since we don't offer any ad space on our site (this is not our business model) this does not make sense. Are there any other options to link back to our site within video elements and cards? We'd like some sort of video overlay linking rather than only a link in the comments.

Thank you

I have several questions related to Youtube Recommendations, I'm also questioning Youtube's internal security related to "accessing the recommended algorithm", which I believe might be compromised, based on certain signals throughout these past two years.

1.
[when watch/search history is OFF+empty]
Why are the only recommended videos from my Liked-playlist? And the Home feed only recommends 8 year old videos of channels I'm subscribed to. Not even random, always the same "most viewed" videos.
[when watch/search history is ON]
Why are the only recommended videos the newest/most viewed uploads by the biggest channels I'm already subscribed to?
Why are most recommended videos not related to the actual video I'm watching?
Am I mistaken if I assume that recommendations should at least be "related" to the currently playing video?
Will there be an improvement in recommendations when watching/finding "Copyright Free Music", now I constantly get slammed with a random VEVO track after every copyright free track.

2.
Give us the ability to block certain channels from being recommended. For some reason I was being spammed for over a year with 5-minute Crafts, 7-Second Riddles and Brightside, some Bollywood channels including T-Series, and a few others I can't remember. Also, give us a proper way to to steer our own recommendations. Like blocking certain genres such as beauty, unboxings, cartoons, Elsagate, coding, etc...

Lately I've been getting weird 2 hour long how to "coding tutorials" with 20 millions views. I can't even program, I never watched anything related to computer programming. Why does this happen? I think because of my next point, which is an "unclear" violation of Youtube's Terms of Service. And needs to be looked at.

2.
How do "hundreds" of kids channels "take over" the recommended section on the entire Youtube platform? Well, it happened on the 14th of May 2018, between 02:00 AM GMT+1 and 06:00 AM GMT+1. These so-called Elsagate videos were being recommended EVERYWHERE, including video pages with adult topics such as Mark Zuckerbergs hearing, and the Daily Show.
Since this issue is related to influencing/gaming the algorithm, why didn't Youtube come forward with some kind of statement or acknowledgedment? For at least 4 hours, all recommended traffic from the whole Youtube platform was directed to those Elsagate videos. They gained millions of views in one hour

What impact does this have on overall channel performance?
At that time, before the Elsagate influx, I had over 20K steady views per day, which I had for months. Just within a matter of days after Elsagate videos took over the entirety of Youtube (see Tweets), my viral video dropped to 500 views per day. I can't help it, but I strongly believe Elsagate videos destroyed the popularity of my viral video.

I will keep creating great quality videos, and being struck down by Elsagate will not change that. All it did was raise a few questions about it's impact on overall channel performances. And mostly, how could this even happen???

I'm thinking it's a new way of botting:
buying your access to the Youtube algorithm, and actually getting millions of legit views by being recommended on every page on Youtube.

MY ADVICE: Do extensive security reviews over at the Google / Youtube offices. Make sure nobody has access to restricted parts of Youtube. Especially outside sources. Because I feel that Youtube might be from the inside. I believe there might be some backdoor into the algorithm. If Youtube keeps persisting that all botted subscribers are dealt with and deleted, and somehow it takes Youtube over 4 hours to notice that the whole platform has started to recommend weird and questionable kids channels, even ignoring it ever happened, then I'm suspecting those weird kids channels are influencing the algorithm in some other way.

Also considering that channels such as 5-minute Crafts, 7-Second Riddles, Bright Side, and the more famous T-Series, we've never heard of before, gets recommended for over two years on my Home feed/video pages, and here they are, beating the biggest Youtuber in two years time. And I'm not only talking about T-Series, 5-minute Crafts and BrightSide had a few million subscribers when I got them in my Home feed. Now they've got over 48 million. I'm not saying that 5-minute Crafts or T-Series are botting, all I'm saying is that they were recommended to my, by Youtube, for over two years. And I'm questioning why THEY get recommended but not a cool channel I'm actually interested in (such as Corridor, RocketJump, etc)

Therefore, I'd really want to request Youtube to do some extensive internal security reviews.

On my main channel, DestroyerTha1st, I publish ROBLOX content that may consist criticizing others for them to improve or gameplays on ROBLOX. Could cussing on the videos affect the video being suggested to others? I have swearing in my videos, but not to the point where it offends others. Thanks.

Hey, so how are you going to improve the algorithm for animators? Why can't film and animation be separate as a lot of animators are just 1 person who have to compete against movies with nearly million dollar budgets. It doesn't feel very "you"tube for animators. And it hasn't felt that way in almost 5 years. The notification bell doesn't even work for a lot of my subscribers :/ I've been with Youtube from the start since 2006 and you've been destroying animators every year.

Why is the YouTube copyright system so obviously broken, being brought to your attention MULTIPLE times yet you still choose to ignore them because you are money hungry? A lot of channels are having their videos demonetised for using a 3 second copyrighted sound byte and then they earn 0 money from that video. Even though the sound byte is used completely in fair use, huge media companies claim 10 minute long videos and claim that they own the WHOLE video when in fact they are abusing your broken system and you are letting them do so. Its not fair that you have the power to control these things and you completely refuse to acknowledge your own broken systems.
