Required 2-Step Verification for Creators in the YouTube Partner Program
1
Hi YPP Creators,

Heads up – starting on November 1, 2021: YouTube will require all monetizing YouTube channels to enable 2-step verification (2SV).

If you don’t turn on 2-Step Verification by November 1, you will not be able to access YouTube Studio or YouTube Studio Content Manager until you secure your account with 2SV. So it’s important that you set this up to continue to access YouTube Studio and manage your content. We recommend turning on 2SV from your Google Account page today. And note that anyone with any level of access to your channel will need to have 2SV enabled by November 1st to continue accessing that channel.

What is 2-Step Verification
2SV is a tool that helps keep bad actors out even if they get your login information (username and password). Once enabled, each time you sign into your Google Account, you'll need your password and a second form of verification. This helps protect your YouTube channel (and Google Account) from unauthorized access, phishing, malware, or data breaches. Learn more about how 2-Step Verification works.

How to enable 2-Step Verification
From your Google Account page, click on “Get Started” and follow the steps to add this extra layer of security for your YouTube channel. You’ll also receive notifications directly in YouTube Studio to prompt you to get started. If you have multiple Google Accounts, make sure you enable 2SV for the Google Account associated with your YouTube channel!

What happens next?
Once you enable 2SV, signing into your account will work a little differently:
  1. Whenever you sign into Google, you'll enter your password as usual.
  2. Next, a code will be sent to your phone via text, voice call, or our mobile app. Or, if you have a Security Key, you can insert it into your computer’s USB port.
What else can I do to protect my account?
  • Create a strong password and don’t share it!
  • Check your channel-level permissions under ‘Settings’ and verify they’re correct. This is important because it determines who has access to your YouTube channel.
  • Avoid phishing scams & remember to always report phishing emails.
  • Check out more ways to Secure Your YouTube Account on our YouTube Creators channel.

As always, reach out to us with any questions!

What about those who have no interest at all in monetizing their channels but are creating videos for their own private groups, families, etc? Will they be made to use 2fa as well?
