Use your artist name as your channel name

Good channel names can help fans to easily find your official channel in search results and your official videos across YouTube. Poor channel names can make discovery of your channel and your videos more difficult for fans, and potentially have a negative impact on your analytics.

For example, a good channel name for the band Big Light would be Big Light. A good rule of thumb is to use the name that's on your most recent release.

Follow these best practices to ensure that your channel name is optimised for fans on YouTube:
  • Use proper capitalisation: e.g. don't use "big light" or "BIG LIGHT", unless your brand explicitly uses capitalisation as part of the styling.
  • Use proper spacing: e.g. don't use 'BigLight', unless your brand explicitly uses concatenated names.
  • Avoid extra words: e.g. don't add 'Official', 'TV', 'Channel', 'YouTube', 'Productions' etc. to your name.
  • Choose a primary language: If your audience spans many languages, choose one language for your name. You can add alternative translations that will show up depending on the fan's language preferences.

Note: Changing your channel name will also change your name across other Google products, unless you have transferred your channel to a brand account. A brand account will allow you to have a name that only applies to YouTube, and it also allows you to give channel permissions to other people on your team.

Curate your content

Curate featured video

You can fully curate the featured video and top section content of your Official Artist Channel.

You can choose which video you want to show at the top of your Official Artist Channel. Choose different videos for new visitors and returning subscribers.

  1. Sign in to YouTube.
  2. Click your profile picture in the top-right corner.
  3. Click Your Channel.
  4. In the upper right, click on CUSTOMISE CHANNEL.
  5. Hover over the featured video section.
  6. In the top-right corner, click edit .
  7. Use the tabs at the top of the dialogue box to edit content for returning subscribers or new visitors
  8. Click on Edit.
  9. Choose the video or playlist that you want to feature.
  10. Click Done

Here's how to feature your playlist: 
  1. Sign in to YouTube.
  2. Follow the instructions to create a playlist of the content that you want to show.
  3. Go to your Official Artist Channel.
  4. In the top right-hand corner, select Customise Channel. If you don't see this, hover over the artist-curated section (the section directly below the featured video). Click Edit .
  5. Toggle off Auto Playlist.
  6. In the dialogue box that pops up, choose your playlist from the drop-down menu. 
  7. Click Done


Once fans subscribe, they may also start getting notifications when you publish new videos. By default, we'll only send highlights from the channel.

If you have an Official Artist Channel, viewers will only see notifications originating from the official channel in their subscriptions feed.

The type of notification they'll get from the Official Artist Channel depends on the notification preferences they've had for your other channels. Preferences from a topic channel do not affect notification settings for the Official Artist Channel.
  • If viewers set bell notifications on the OAC, they'll get bell notifications regardless of their setting on other channels.
  • If viewers set highlights on the OAC, they'll get highlights regardless of their setting on other channels. 
  • If they have any other notification setting on the OAC and they have either bell notifications or no notifications set on the partner-provided channel, the OAC will inherit the notification settings from the partner-provided channel.

View YouTube Analytics for Artists

If you're an artist on YouTube and you have an Official Artist Channel, you can use the YouTube Studio app to see analytics across all of the channels where your music resides (e.g. artist owned & operated channel, topic channel and VEVO) to get insights into your footprint on YouTube.
