Use picture-in-picture on certain devices

Picture-in-picture (PiP) allows you to watch YouTube videos while using other apps on your mobile device.

Note: Picture-in-picture is currently only available for YouTube Red members with Android mobile devices running Android version 8.0 Oreo. Learn more about other video options on YouTube.

Picture-in-picture overview

How picture-in-picture works

Picture-in-picture shrinks the video into a small player that you can move around your home screen and position over other apps. With this feature enabled, you can continue watching YouTube videos while using other apps on your mobile device.

Who can use picture-in-picture

Picture-in-picture is currently only available for YouTube Red members with Android mobile devices running Android 8.0 Oreo. You need to have both YouTube Red and an Android device running Android 8.0 to use PiP. This will work with videos in the YouTube app for Android and on youtube.com in the Chrome mobile app.

There are two ways to do this:
  • Turn off picture-in-picture for YouTube in your Android settings.
  • Switch from PiP to background playback in the YouTube app by tapping the headphone icon.
