Schedule videos for download on mobile in select countries

In select locations, you can schedule certain videos to be downloaded later if you're signed in to the YouTube app and you keep your mobile data on at night. We call this Smart Download.

Smart Download is currently available in India. Find out if your mobile operator supports Smart Download.

You can also download videos to watch offline right away.

Schedule videos to download

If you are located in a country that supports Smart Download, you can schedule certain videos from the YouTube mobile app to download during a pre-defined window of time determined by your mobile provider. This window, usually at night, allows you to schedule videos for download when data rates are cheaper, or when you have access to data cashback. Note: Keep in mind that you are responsible for any data charges that might apply.

Once you schedule the videos you’d like to download, they will be saved automatically during the window. Keep your mobile data on at night to make sure the videos are successfully downloaded to your device.

Once they've been downloaded, videos can be played offline for up to 48 hours. After that, you'll need to reconnect your device to a mobile or Wi-Fi network every 48 hours to allow the app to check for changes to the video or its availability.

In some countries, non-music content can be played for up to 29 days without requiring an internet connection. You must reconnect to the internet at least once every 29 days after.

Note: Your mobile phone must be connected to your mobile network to use Smart Download. If your mobile phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network, the videos you schedule to download will save to your device immediately rather than during the pre-defined window of time determined by your mobile provider.

Schedule a video or playlist for Smart Download

  1. Go to the video or playlist you'd like to Smart Download.
  2. Tap the Download button  under the video or playlist.
  3. Choose the video resolution you'd prefer.
  4. Select Download at night.
  5. The video or playlist is scheduled for Smart Download when the Download button  turns blue.

Make sure to keep your mobile data on at night to successfully schedule videos for download. If your device loses connectivity while you're downloading with Smart Download, your progress will resume automatically when you reconnect to a mobile network.

Once downloaded, videos can be played offline for up to 48 hours. After that, you'll need to reconnect your device to a mobile or Wi-Fi network every 48 hours to allow the app to check for changes to the video or its availability. This process does NOT download the video again.

Note: In some countries, non-music content can be played for up to 29 days without requiring an internet connection. You need to go online once every 29 days to renew the video.

Note: If a video is no longer available for offline playback, it will be removed from your device during the next sync.
